Kara was born with Stickler syndrome,
which is a rare genetic disorder.
And it was kind of a surprise.
There's no like genetic test or prenatal test that you can take
to find out, you know, if there's any genetic issues.
The collagen gene is defective.
So there's not enough collagen to support the cartilage
in your body.
So that's exactly what was affected,
so her eyes, her ears, her mid-face and her joints.
So she he does have hearing loss.
She has moderate-severe hearing loss.
And she has -- she is severely myopic.
So she's very near-sighted. She wears glasses.
And already at a young age she experiences joint pain.
A lot of times people think of disability as a negative.
And I could see that.
But being in that situation, we have a special needs child,
we see it actually as a blessing because we've met so many people
that we probably would never have met.
She got her first pair of glasses when she was
three months.
She wasn't even three months actually when she got
her first pair of glasses.
And when I met Nohemi, Nohemi was just
so tender- hearted.
She just didn't make a big deal that it was a baby.
She was like, oh, she, you know --
what's her name and kind of played with her.
She didn't make it a big deal that it was a baby.
And for me that was settling, you know.
Like, it made me more relaxed because I was still
dealing with it.
To her it seemed like a big challenge.
But for me it was more like we can help you.
We are gonna do it, so don't worry, you know?
It's my job to help you and to help her.
So the glasses that we got for her weren't something
that were -- they weren't a specific model.
She kind of had to put a hodgepodge of other parts
together in order for her to make the glasses for Kara.
From when we first -- when she was first born to right now
we never expected this transition,
and we never expected her to be where she's at.
And there's nothing that I really think can hold her back.
We worry about a thousand -- thousands of things with her.
But knowing that she's getting good care is not
one of them at all.
Looking at her walking and talking and just being a typical
three year old, it's amazing.
