Hello my friends I am Galilaios member and moderator of Total War Hellas Forum
In Current video will show you the Spartan units created by Total War Hellas Unit Pack Team on SAP package
In particular version 1.5 we added nine historically accurate units with each having a separate description on Sparta Faction, available on campaign map, custom maps and Multiplayer battles!
Also to mention that some audiovisual elements of the units can not be changed at all and the modders are working on the restrictions posed by Rome 2 Game Engine.
Perhaps, in time, CA offers us new tools!
Well the first unit is Arcadians Psiloi! Available from the Building PERIOIKOS CAMP
Arcadia is not just an idyllic place but is a rough place because of the mountainous nature.
The Arcadians are not Dorians nevertheless not less able fighters from neighboring Spartans and demonstrated on many occasions even against the Spartans.
Consequently Arcadians was part of Peloponnesian armies for centuries.
Among the troops who came from Arcadia was Arcadians Psiloi or Skirmishers!
These are lightweight peltasts but a little more durable than many similar Since the are highland farmers and ranchers.
It's Ranged unit with javelins and equipped with axe for close combat
The second unit is Skyrites Hoplites! Available from Hoplite Barracks.
Skyrites lived in North Laconia and South Arcadia.
Could be considered either Perioikoi or similar arrangements inhabitants. It is known from sources that Spartans respected Skyrites and entrusted them with specific tasks to carry out.
Following this tradition necessary new types of troops and new fighting techniques were introduced in Laconia cause of geopolitical changes and Skyrites contributed as a new type of troops in the Spartan army.
There were troops known as thureos spears from rest perioikoi but Skyrites proved more effective.
The third unit is Skyrites sworldsmen also available from Hoplite Barracks
The Skyrites swordsmen is part of the new type of troops I mentioned previously which appeared in Sparta as part of comprehensive reform and are considered knowledgeable of modern art of war.
The fourth unit is Elean horsemen Available from Hoplite Barracks Building.
The Spartan army has a strong military tradition.
After the rise of Thebes and subsequently of Macedonia and the conquests of Alexander, many things have changed in the Greek way of war.
Among these is the increased importance of cavalry on the battlefield. The reforms of the Spartan army introduced the use of cavalry, however the number and quality of the Spartan cavalry was questionable.
Ilia beyond that hosted the Olympic Games, is a rich and fertile area and has its own horses. So the rich Elis could establish a Shocl cavalry unit capable of striking complementary to the Spartan army.
The fifth unit is Peloponnesians Phalanxists available from the Royal Barracks building
During the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, Sparta took heavy blows from the new type of troops and tactics that appeared in Greece.
As a result Sparta dominant hoplites could not compensate the combined arms, tactics and sarissa phalanx.
At this point, necessary measures should be taken and the Spartan army should be reformed.
Initially Perioikoi and some Spartan created phalanx forces and later as the situation worsened, freed helots, known as neodamodeis and Peloponnesian allies and other allies in the regime of the Spartans, created the new body of the Spartan army trying to address the Achaean and Macedonian phalanxes.
this new type of army saved Sparta as these Sarissa units demonstrated that in equation with Spartans they made an achievement in phalanx ar of war
The sixth unit is Argives Thorakites available from the Royal Barracks building
The Argive army was for centuries the counterweight of Sparta as these two forces clashed for the hegemony of Peloponnesus.
The Dorian militarist tradition runs through the Argives themselves and for a great period of time they were considered as one of the best hoplite forces in Greece
They were also among the pioneers of hoplite warfare ,probably due to their early sucesses and the fact that the hoplon shield was also named "Argive shield"
However unlike Sparta, Argos is a city more open to new ideas and concepts hence it had a democratic regime and a artistic tradition with a famous school of sculpture. This adaptivity can also be reflected on the Argive swordsmen.
Loyal to their eponymous shield but more akin to Romanized infantry than hoplites.
The seventh unit is Cretans Pirates provided through the building Mercenary Camp and in a future version of SAP will be available as a naval unit!
Cretans are among the Dorian tribes of Greece and akin to Spartans themselves.Although they have many social similarities with the Spartan social life and some institutions
Conversly they were focusing more on archery and light infantry and they managed to be high valued mercenaries all around the hellenistic states.
Nevertheless they were also famous as notorious pirates and privateers mainly because they were islanders and in close proximity with very profitable trade routs aroud their island.
These pirates, fighting as epivates (marines) are an excellent light skirmishing infantry for their Spartan allies.
Eighth unit are Perioikoi Horsemen provided by Holosideros Barracks
The cavalry was never a main weapon of the Spartan army
The advancements though in Greek warfare after the Peloponesian war and the subsequent Spartan losses,
forced Spartans to either seek allied cavalry forces wither creating one of their own.In a same manner as past times, Perioikoi were essential in developing a basic swift cavalry force with reconnaissance and hit and run duties
The ninth and last state unit areTrophemoi Hoplites available from the Royal Barracks building
Sparta was famous around the Greek world not for her civilization or her monuments but for her morals, values and military training,A lot of Laconophile Greeks, mainly aristocrats, sent their sons to be trained along with the Spartan youths in the notorious agoge.
To this group there were also added the sons of some wealthy Perioikoi.
All together these trainees were collectively called "trophimoi" and despite having the same training as the Spartan Homoioi, they didn't have their status(political rights)
Some of the foreign trophimoi were serving in the Spartan army itself.Later when Agis IV reformed the Spartan army, he granted citizenship to the trophimoi making them full citizens.
Theyre military training and their wealth made trophimoi a sturdy and valiant heavy infantry.
Finally to mention that until 15 a.c
