And now let's get a check on the arts and culture scene.
Yim Yoonhee joins us live for a look at a few exhibitions that provide a very unique
opportunity in art. Good afternoon.
Good afternoon. Nowadays with the internet, we have access
to just about anything, and that includes art masterpieces.
But there's a big difference between seeing a simple, 2D image, and seeing something in
person.
Exactly, which is why they create replicas of works of art in the first place,... to
preserve the original and also to share the works of arts with a bigger audience.
Take a look at a few exhibitions in Seoul that feature legendary artists and artworks.
Standing more than 5 meters tall, this statues is a legendary work in the art world.
Hand carved out of stone, the figure stands, one of the most famous statues in all of history.
From the Renaissance period, Michelangelo is known as a genius artist who has created
countless masterpieces, such as the Pieta statue, which is originally housed at St.
Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. And exact replicas of his works have been
created making his work more accessible for all.
Other replicas of famous works by the artist have also been put on display,... including
a recreated work room, that let's people see just what Michelango himself would have seen
hundreds of years ago.
"We wanted to recreate the exact battle scene. From every angle, we want it to look identical,...
so people can look and draw exactly what was there years ago."
Aside from shopping, many department stores also house art galleries,... some featuring
works from world famous artists. 17 different artists and 90 different works
of art,... these replicas of famous art works are made more accessible through this exhibition,
and are much more affordable, giving the public a chance to express their inner lover for
art.
Who are some of the artists with works at the second exhibition?
These works are from artists from all over the world.
A few weeks ago, we talked about the works of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, a very well-known
pop artist. There are also the works of American artist
Kiki Smith. Most of the works are from artists who are
still alive and are from the modern and contemporary art periods.
But let's talk a little more about replicas. What is the purpose of a replica?
So I mentioned earlier that a replica is used to preserve the original.
That's really important, because some works of art are priceless and need to be preserved
so they can be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations.
But much to the surprise of many, museums often put replicas on display so the original
can be shown at other museums. The process of creating replicas has in fact
become an art in and of itself now. There are various levels of replicas and you
know they actually come with some pretty hefty price tags as well.
I'd like to think that nothing can beat the original, but it's also better than not being
able to see the work at all. Thank you for that report.
Always a pleasure.
