So to name CaCl2, we first need to determine whether it's an ionic or molecular compound.
Looking at the periodic table we Calcium is a metal and that Chlorine is a non-metal.
So a metal and a non-metal tells us that we're going to have an ionic compound.
We can also see that we only have two different types of atoms - we have a Calcium atom and
we have the Chlorine atom. So when we only have two different types of atoms we call
this a binary compound. So this is Binary Ionic and they are actually probably the easiest
to name of all the compounds.
First we name the metal. In this case we just look on the periodic table and is says Calcium,
and that's the name we use. So Calcium is the first part. For the second part we go
back to the periodic table and we write the name of the non-metal, Chlorine, but we take
the -ine ending off and -ide.
So the name for CaCl2 is Calcium Chloride.
