Here are the top dogs of the male category.
Dogs that appear in shows are the best of the best.
I came first place at the World Dog Show.
Best in Show.
That dog has won at all the most famous shows.
This is the father of my dog.
Everyone in the show are like that.
Everyone is here for the same thing.
I'm Toshinori Omura, owner of the Smash Poodle kennel.
I mainly breed toy poodles.
The PCA (Poodle Club of America) hosts events in which poodles from around the world gather.
My dogs have won 1st place in the toy-poodle category for 8 years in a row.
And I became the first Japanese ever to win best of breed at the biggest show in England.
I also took Best in Show in Australia.
I've won prizes in many other countries like Taiwan, Italy, and Spain, too.
This trophy is from the 2010 World Dog Show in Denmark.
It's like the dog Olympics.
I received this trophy and ribbon when I won Best in Show.
I've loved dogs and animals since I was a kid.
I took part in my first dog show when I was 13 with a Shiba Inu.
I came in last. Second from last, I mean.
I got hooked on dog shows and became a pet groomer,
so I could take part in shows as I worked.
This is the lawn where we exercise.
We go on walks or practice together like this,
and the dogs are allowed to run around here as much as they want, all day.
Here, the dogs exercise one at a time.
It'll be a bit noisy, but let's take a peek.
They're all champions.
This is where the champions can play.
It's a space where I can be with the dogs all day.
This one's very small.
I'm thinking about taking him to America with me. Let's see how he grows.
This is the little guy's father.
And over here is the father's father.
He took Best in Show at the 2007 World Show in Mexico.
It's a litlle faded now though.
Here's the female who was No. 1 in America for several years in a row.
She's these puppies' grandmother.
This little one is my personal favorite that I want to take around the world.
The first step in breeding champion poodles is making good puppies.
There's no guarantee that good specimens will always produce good offspring,
but it's good to pair up the best dogs possible.
I take all of my experience and knowledge into account when breeding my dogs.
Once a dog becomes a champion, its DNA must be registered with the JKC (Japan Kennel Club).
This can be used to look up the dog's mother and father.
If the dog runs away, you can confirm it's yours.
This puppy is two months old.
I'm standing him up to check his balance.
He's got small eyes, and big ears that go down to here.
This is how big they get when they reach four months.
Everything like the shape and angle of the tail falls into certain standards,
so I need to choose puppies that conform to them.
The puppies stop growing around nine months or one year old.
That's when I have to make the decision about whether it can become a top class god,
about whether it can go on to win all over the world.
Today is the Tokyo block.
The JKC is divided up into various blocks.
It's probably the second biggest show in Japan.
I'm sure this applies to other events besides dog shows,
but everyone here wants their dog to be the champion.
They've made copious preparations as breeders and handlers,
trying their hardest to make sure they win.
Omura cares for and handles the best dogs.
Shida is his right-hand man.
They go around the world together and show off the best dogs.
Don't touch my dog.
The dogs are starting to make their entrance.
The most important thing is the dog's overall character.
After that we look at how the dog is styled.
We also look at the dog's condition before deciding the winners.
He's a good judge. Excellent.
Everyone at the show is the same.
Everyone's here for the same thing.
But winning isn't easy.
You need effort, preparation, and a bit of luck.
You need everything.
No. 922, toy poodle.
We can't predict which dog is going to win.
So I do my utmost to select what I believe is the best dog from my pack.
They check everything from the dogs' teeth to their personality and coats.
I maintain the best breeding stock,
and give their puppies to the best owners possible so that they will be treasured their whole lives.
Dog shows are an integral part of that process.
I'll try again.
This time wasn't quite up to par. I'll just have to breed a better dog.
I think this dog still has potential, too.
