hey guys Pit's here!
this week, a tutorial about 3D drawing (tromp l'oeil)
what's a 3D drawing? it's an illusion done with a perspective effect
First step: take a
photo of your sheet, and don't move the camera (use a tripod)
then i'll use this photo to do a photomontage of my drawing
Use photoshop or Gimp to do this
put your photo reference or your drawing on the paper
Just the way you want to see it in the final drawing
Draw a vector around the sheet, and link it to the drawing
Then you can transform the two layers and flatten the perspective
My canvas size is A3, but you can use A4.
To do that, Cmd+T on Mac, Ctrl+T on Windows.
You can deform your image so it can be drawn
here's your photo reference
How to reproduce this reference now?
Pretty easy in fact, i'll use square grids (i'm cheating a bit ^^)
you can use a photoshop brush to do so
now you can start drawing with your pencil
Don't pay attention to my big head now
I did so much fingerprint on paper
because it was the summer hottest day, here in France
For guides i use HB pencil only and a measure
It revives good memories, back to high school
Or maybe bad ones, i'm not sure... :D
For the next steps i'll use Sakura electric eraser
Cretacolor leads: black nero, charcoal and white lead
with a metal mechanical pencil
I start to draw global shapes contours
i'll use charcoal forgery intense blacks
don't draw charcoal on top of nero leads as i did
charcoal tends to get ineffective when paper is saturated with graphite
don't forget to draw value contours
because without the grid you'll get lost quickly, believe me
Here in France we tend to lack of toned-gray paper blocks
I love those, especially US brandt.
It gets very expensive when you buy per unit
I use to use cretacolor nero lead a lot
I love the way it reacts with textured paper
You don't have to be a good draftsman
You just have to be patient
You can use pastel, it works fine too
See the how the charcoal fails?
I made
a mistake, i should have used it from the start.
blah blah blah ;p
You can use
the eraser to go backwards, but i was so lazy...
It's not the first time i do this newbie's mistake
And i think it won't be the last...
For the light and reflection use the white lead
I don't use stump so much, i prefer texture
But stumps are good for realistic drawings
See how it looks with perspective now. Mission done!
Test different light settings to increase the effect
The drawing is decent but not perfect.
Since it's my first 3D drawing, i assume it's not so bad.
I'll do better next time for sure :)
For drawing an illusion, prefer mat medias like charcoal or felt pen
graphite isn't a smart choice because of light angle
See you guys, take care. -Pit-
