Morning guys! Oh, Beautiful morning.
My name is Steve Frykholm.
I work at Herman Miller, and I've been there for 42 years. I'm Vice
President/Creative Director, but I usually tell people I'm just a graphic
designer.
Currently we are at our residence
in Belmont, Michigan, which is 20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids.
It's peaceful and restful out here. In the spring I'll hear the birds.
In the wintertime when there is a foot of snow on the ground, and the stars are just
out and up and the Big Dipper... it's just
it's just... really nice.
I enjoy the horses a lot,
and it's totally different
except for maybe spreading the manure
than the office.
It's quiet in the morning, it sort of
puts my mind in a good place.
Oftentimes
if I have a design problem that I haven't quite solved
something just snaps and I might
have an ah-ha.
you know it's it's a....
I'm glad I don't work
24/7
because it's the breaks
that allow my mind to refresh
and regenerate.
You know when I joined Herman Miller it was 1970.
I was the first
internal graphic designer.
Sometimes it's easy
Sometimes it's hard
Sometimes it takes forever, sometimes it never happens, let's face it
we all have stuff in the drawer we don't want to show anybody,
and then there's the other stuff
that museums have accepted into their collection. It's terrific.
As a graphic designer my work is static
unless I am working on a video.
So performing arts it just
I get a little jealous
because there's music,
and there's motion
and there is lighting and color and constant
motion
not to mention the athleticism
of the dancers and their skill and ability.
How do they do that? I tried it one night
at the office, and I about fell on my ***!
I remember once I asked if I could just stay back stage
and see a performance from back stage.
It is so much fun to be behind the scenes. It is just a different perspective.
I had no idea of the lights
from the wings
are so bright.
That is how I feel when I see the ballet.
My heart just beats a little faster.
I didn't plan on
having horses.
I didn't plan that I would be interested in the ballet.
It just sort of
happened. As Bob Propst would say, it was a fortuitous experience.
