Taiwan student drowns in school pool.
"My baby..."
"Please don't cry, Mrs. Lin."
"My baby..."
This mother from Taiwan's Changhwa County couldn't stop crying yesterday.
Her son just died at a swimming class.
16-year-old Zong-jing Lin just started his first year of high school.
He knew how to swim.
More than 100 students were scheduled to be in the pool yesterday morning.
Lin was among them.
The students who couldn't swim stayed at the shallow end of 1.4 meters.
A fellow student spotted Lin at the deep end of 1.6 meters.
He was struggling and was letting out faint noises.
The student found the gym teacher.
Another teacher jumped in immediately to rescue Lin.
CPR was performed.
Lin coughted up a good amount of blood.
He lost all signs of life on his way to the hospital.
700c.c. of blood-tainted water was drawn from his lungs.
Ming-hsian Hsieh, Director of Renhe Hospital: "His lungs were filled with water."
"We injected into his heart to revive it, but the heart beats didn't last."
("How many injections were there?") "Maybe four injetions."
Lin was transferred to another hospital, where he was declared dead.
Staff from school: "We accompanied him here. We asked him to come back to us."
"We did everything we could."
The mother learned of her son's death.
She was devastated.
She was placed on a stretcher.
Mrs. Lin: "It's hopeless."
The remnants of the blood that Lin caughed up remains by the pool.
(Are the teachers certified as lifeguards?) Absolutely.
(Were there any lifeguards on duty?)
The teachers are certified.
According to the police,
the gym teacher failed to pay attention to all students in the pool, leading Lin to drown.
He could be responsible for the neglect.
