Hello, I'm Ron Braxley,
and this is edTPA 101, Introduction to the Swivl kit.
The Swivl is a personal robotic camera operator
which will pan to follow your movements around the classroom. The purpose of this
brief video is to introduce you to the components of the Swivl kit,
and to provide a brief demonstration of the unit in operation.
The kit includes a 128 gigabytes
iPad Mini with Retina display including the Lightning connector cable.
The Swivl unit, which includes the unit itself
a remote marker, a lanyard, an audio
and a power cable. A basic video tripod,
a kit bag and a bag for the tripod. So there's the kit.
Let's take a quick look at the swivel in action. Place the Swivl on a tripod, or
on any
stable flat surface. You mount the iPad Mini in the swivel base,
and you wear or carry the marker as you teach. The base and marker communicate
wirelessly
over a distance of about thirty feet which causes the base unit to pan and
tilt the iPad
to keep you in frame. The marker has a built-in microphone
which also communicates wirelessly with the base
giving you the option to use a wireless mic. You need to use the provided audio
cable
hooking the base to the iPad's headphone jack to use this function.
The kit includes a lanyard, which I'm wearing,
which will give you hands-free use of the Swivl.
The Swivl may be particularly useful
if you're teaching PE, or if you move around a lot.
Let's take a look at the swivel itself.
Here it is. This is the front where you see the
S. The back of the unit is where you see a number of connection ports.
The marker, which I'm holding, is actually stowed in the base unit,
Were it is charged. So you will flip up
this little door to access the marker.
There is
of course a power supply, but the unit will operate
on battery on a charge, which is an internal battery,
so you do wanna make sure you fully charge both the base unit
and the marker before you begin, and that would be true for your iPad as well.
So you take the a short
audio cable, which is provided, and put it into the
audio jack there. You mount the iPad Mini
in the unit like this. Now, if you want to monitor yourself
place the iPad so that you can see the screen.
If you want to use the the front facing camera
then flip the iPad around like this.
That's a choice you'll need to make. We'll go ahead
and put it back, using I believe, it's called FaceTime camera.
So take the cable, the audio cable,
find the headphone jack
and plug it in, and now you'll be able to use the wireless microphone.
So I'm going to turn the Swivl unit on.
Hold down the power button for a couple seconds
and you should see red lights.
I'm now going to power on the marker,
and I have a green light on both the marker and the base unit.
Now the marker needs to be about a minimum of two feet away from the Swivl
for proper operation and no more than about 30 feet, though I haven't tested the
the limit personally. And as you can see,
as I move the marker, the Swivl
is panning to track the marker. Now as I said, you can use the
lanyard to give you hands free operation
so you just slide the marker into the lanyard, and you want to make sure
and place the microphone, which is a small grate at the top,
in an upward orientation so that it will pick up your voice.
And if I move just a little bit, again you can see that
the Swivl is tracking my movements.
So it's all very straightforward and we think it might be a potentially
useful tool for you as you go through your edTPA process.
So, that's it for this video. Thank you for watching.
Keep an eye out for our other edTPA 101 videos.
Goodbye.
