This expanding movement is called Peng.
When the opponent applies power to push you - you use Lu.
Ji means to attack your opponent with a sideways movement.
An is to push with two hands, it can be up or downwards.
Or on same level, all called An.
Cai is the same as Lu, but goes downwards.
When your opponent pushes, follow him, lowering your center downwards.
Cai has a meaning of pulling something abruptly, or picking.
Lie is to separate attack in short distance.
Kao is to hit the opponent with shoulder, back or elbow, all called kao.
Attack forward is called shoulder Kao.
Peng - Lu - Ji - An - Cai - Lie - Zhou - Kao change into each other.
In that case how are they used?
Tuishou came from sanda (free fight).
This is a process of pushing hands.
The first person turns round and use shoulder to attack -- this is Ji.
I move my body from dantian.
Other person should now change his direction of force.
He uses Peng, I use An.
He uses Lu to defend the balance of dantian.
I follow the contact point to that direction.
I lightly push there and feel that I have to change my power a little (tuikong -- push the air and feel).
The change I did to keep the balance, I did Ji.
When I use Ji, he has to use An.
I use Peng, and when Peng goes out of its limits,
then he can apply An to my center.
I use Lu, he uses Ji.
This is a circle - Peng, Lu, Ji, An.
Cai on the same level is called Lu, when it is a little downwards -- it is called cai.
Lie is to separate two people to break out.
Turning around, use Zhou to attack the opponent.
Either horizontal or vertical, as long as you use elbow attack, it is called Zhou.
Any body attack is called kao.
Xiao Jun (son of CXW) uses back to hit me, this is called Bei Zhe Kao (method to hit with back).
I move forward like this, it is called Qian Jian Kao (to hit with side shoulder).
Using torso to attack is also called Kao.
Peng, Lu, Ji, An, Cai, Lie, Zhou, Kao change into each other, use each other.
Softness overwhelms power
To attack is to use power (fa-jin), everybody knows that.
Rou (being soft) is just changing, not using power.
When the opponent uses power,
we use softness to change his power direction.
Opponent always attacks your center line.
Neutralizing his power needs Rouhua (softness).
and when the opponent is losing balance,
We use power outburst (fa-jin) to attack a part of his body within our reach.
this is called dividing soft power and hard power.
XiaoJun pushes me, my center line, my center is here.
This power can't reach my center.
This process is called RouHua (softness).
My attacking strength is here.
During the process soften his strength and lead it out.
And then send his power back to him.
Say he wants to attack my center.
I change, following the direction of his power.
When he misses my center, I apply my power to the other side.
At this moment he loses balance.
The process of following him also helps saving my power.
He lost balance, but I saved my strength.
Softness helps saving power.
When your counterpart loses his balance, you can attack with fa-jin (power outburst).
This exactly explains how to keep your attack hidden.
At first you must not attack, but neutralize him.
Use his movement to move your body and to save your own power.
It's not only me, it's the general audience and taiji quan enthusiasts
who want to understand this mysterious saying.
What does that mean? "To use small power to move 500 kg"
500 kg or not, certainly it is unimportant.
it means very small strength is used
to move something big - not exactly 500 kg, maybe 250 kg.
it's just very big.
It means use small power to affect a larger power.
So how to do it?
For example let's say it has 500 kg of force.
I move like this, use my 50 kg, but still can't move it.
He uses his hands, I use Jin.
I follow his direction of power
It is important to move my center (dantian), following him.
So, I use small strength, don't use strength to counter him.
according to his direction of power I move center to follow him, help him and change his direction a little.
it's called "using very light strength to change very strong power (Li)".
People call things mysterious, but actually they just don't understand them clearly.
«There is a magic effect», they say.
When its clear to you, you finally understand the system, it is called science.
Tai ji quan is not an exception.
It just had historical language problems.
Letting yourself be soft, as soft as to become strong, is it correct? Yes, it is.
but people who just started to learn don't know what it is.
You can attack people, but you also can have healthy long life.
Mixing all these things makes it really difficult to understand
Sounds like a mystery.
But if we can make it clear inside,
and do things systematically, it just becomes a science.
Now I explained how three movement forms exist in one movement system.
If everybody understands it clearly and can see the system here,
then it means I changed something mysterious into science.
People who teach Taiji should open their minds, and not focus at other coaches' students.
Focus at the fresh people to teach them Taiji,
to involve those who are not involved.
We need a lot of work to promote information about Taiji.
I want more people to understand Taiji.
I want more people to join studying Taiji.
