Although a fall can happen at any age, falls are the leading cause of death due to injury
amongst Canadians over the age of 65. So, the good news is that most falls can be prevented
by following a few simple steps. So, the one thing you can do is stay active. Muscle weakness
can lead to falls, so focus on exercises that strengthen your lower body, and also choose
exercises that focus on improving your balance, your posture, and your coordination. The next
thing you can do is make sure that you have your medications regularly reviewed by a health
care provider. Certain medications or combinations of medications can make you drowsy, dizzy,
or unsteady on your feet. Another thing you can do is have your vision checked regularly.
If you do have prescription glasses or contacts, be sure to wear them at all times. So getting
rid of falling hazards is very important. Simple things like keeping clutter off the
floors and stairways can make a big difference. Also, think about your rugs. So you want to
get rid of throw rugs. And any area carpets that you have, make sure that they are non-skid.
Keep things within arm reach. So when you are in the kitchen, try to keep things in
hip to shoulder height. In the bathroom you might want to consider the use of non-slip
mats in bathtubs or showers, for that matter. Lighting is another big thing to consider.
So you might want to install higher wattage bulbs, make sure stairways are well lit, and
also having night lights in hallways, especially if you are getting up multiple times in the
night. Footwear is also something else to consider. So for indoor use wearing slippers
with a closed heal and a non-skid sole, and outdoors make sure you choose appropriate
footwear that’s weather appropriate. Outdoors you want to be aware of your surroundings.
So repairing any cracks or uneven surfaces, and being aware of curbs and slopes that could
put you at a higher risk for a fall. You may even want to consider shoulder bags or backpacks
to keep your hands free. Safety equipment at home can also help to avoid falls. So you
might want to consider installing grab bars or rails by toilets or tubs. Mobility aids
such as a cane, walker or rollator are very useful in preventing a fall. If you do have
a mobility aid, make sure it’s well maintained, that its been adjusted properly for your height
and do be sure to use it when necessary. And lastly, take your time, don’t rush. Give
yourself time to get to appointments and be aware of your surroundings.
