>> [Background music] This year we're celebrating an amazing milestone.
It's been 50 years since the first transplant at the University
of Michigan between 2 identical twins.
They did very well and have had 50 years of health ever since that remarkable event.
>> Hi, Joanie.
>> Hi, Janice.
>> I was home at 1 time and we were uptown and she said, "You know, Joanie.
You might be able to give Janice a kidney."
I thought that was pretty cool that I'd be able to do it and I remember then
in the hospital the doctor coming and saying that they were thinking
that maybe they could save your kidneys and I thought, "Well, what's up with that?
I, I thought I'm going to give her my kidney and now they don't want it."
>> I shouldn't have, I should've not been here 50 years ago.
I mean, you know, I, you know, if it weren't for, for God's hand in our life
and the technology and the doctors and the nurses at the hospital,
especially when you're busy raising 3 kids at 1 time, it is,
you don't worry about how long you're going to live until something happens.
And thank God nothing happened.
>> And, and I was saying how I always think everything is going to be just fine.
And it, and it was.
>> Yeah, I know.
I know you, you do that.
You're an optimist as opposed to me.
>> Oh, stop it.
You do remember you paid me 25 dollars for that kidney, don't you.
>> No, did I?
>> Oh my gosh, Janice.
You remember that.
>> No I don't.
I really did?
>> You did.
I don't know where you got the 25 dollars, but it was paid in full.
Janice, look at this picture of Dr Turcotte.
Do you see him?
>> Yeah, I remember that.
>> Yeah. Just a gentle, nice man and thank God he was there for us.
>> Well, we were all a little nervous.
But as soon as we saw the kidney making urine, everything calmed down.
Well, it felt exciting, you know.
Something new.
These people had, you know, no hope of living very long until the transplant came along.
>> We're tremendously proud of this remarkable accomplishment.
We're so glad that 50 years later the twins are doing so well.
We're also proud of the fact that over the past 50 years,
we've done 10,000 organ transplants at the University of Michigan.
Fewer than a dozen programs across the country have accomplished
and we're happy to be among that group.
The team at the University of Michigan Transplant Center has always been
on the cutting edge of organ transplantation.
We look forward to a future where we continue to push the state of the art.
