This is 2 News at noon.
Well you might be surprised about thirty million americans has some
degree of hearing loss ranging from mild to severe.
Now, Dr. Saurabh Shah is here to tell us how you can protect yourself
against hearing loss and some of the options if you're hearing is impared.
Now, I know
you can prevent some symptoms of diabetes by diet and exercise.
How can you prevent losing your hearing?
Big thing is uhh, to
keep your ears protected against excessively loud noises.
Like what?
Uh, like for instance iPods.
They've become really prominent in todays culture.
Right.
You don't want to turn those up all the way because that at a full 100% level
it's going to cause some damage to your inner ear hair cells.
See now, we've done with our kids is if we can hear it from
yout to me than it's too loud.
So they need to turn it down. So, just set some little rules of...
Yeah and they do have uh, parental controls on how how loud those iPods can go.
Another, the Jazz are coming into the playoffs in the Delta Center.
Or that ESA can get rockin. So, if you go to event where it's going to
be real loud it's nice to get your plugs.
Yeah, you can still hear what's going on it's just muffles a little bit
Yeah, you want to protect your ears. If you see
hear sirens going off, a fire alarm you know the good Lord gave us
the tragus so we can protect our own ears. And um...
and it's very important, sportsman when they're out shooting
It's important to wear noise protection cause once you get that hearing loss
it is tough to regenerate.
you know we had to have some things if someone's profoundly or
permanently deaf.
Right.
hearing is the only thing that we can regenerate.
The only sense that we can use cochlear implants to restore hearing.
Not surgery as much as implants. Technical advances that allow us to replace hearing.
Well if you're completely deaf, than surgery with a cochlear implant is the option.
But, if you have hearing loss, than hearing aid technology has grwon
unbelievably. Just in the same path that iPod tecnology is growing,
bluetooth technology, all that's going into hearing aids as well.
So, the advances are unbelievable.
So maybe if you, 10 years ago they couldn't help you.
Today, they probably have a better system now.
Now you can. Noise cancelation is dramatic.
If you're at a cocktail party setting and there's a lot of ambiente noise
before hearing aids really had a diffcult time blocking out that ambient noise.
Now it can. You can focus in on a 5 foot radius.
If you have... if you're a golfer and your out in the wind.
You can black out that wind, so you don't get a lot of that feedback.
Wow, that sounds fantastic and I bet people haven't checked into it
and if they do, LDS Hospital.
There you go.
Call, give you call. Ok we're going to take a break and be right back.
