Welcome to The Road to Health training video.
It's brought to you by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services and the National Diabetes Education
Program, or NDEP.
The NDEP is jointly sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, with the
support of more than 200 partner organizations.
We developed this video to help trainers teach Community Health
Workers how to use the Road to Health Toolkit,
also known as the RTH Toolkit.
This toolkit is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program
study, which found that type 2 diabetes can be prevented
or delayed in individuals at high risk who do the
following things: if you're overweight,
lose five to seven percent of your bodyweight.
For a 200-pound person, that means 10 to 14 pounds.
Maintain the weight loss by making healthy food choices,
eat a variety of foods that are low in fat,
and reduce the number of calories you eat each day.
And get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity
physical activity five days a week.
This could be brisk walking, yard work,
or actively playing with children --
for example, playing soccer or riding bicycles with them.
This toolkit is designed to help people like you learn about the
prevention of type 2 diabetes and to provide you with
activities to increase diabetes awareness in your community.
It provides real-life examples as well as
hands-on activities and interactive ideas.
These examples are designed for African American/African
Ancestry and Hispanic/Latino communities --
but really they can appeal to any audience.
The toolkit's components help spread the word that
type 2 diabetes does not have to be a person's destiny.
The components include: a Flipchart, a User's Guide,
an Activities Guide, a Resource Guide, a Photo Journal, a CD/DVD
titled Step by Step: Moving towards prevention ofType 2
Diabetes, a CD/DVD titled Movimiento Por Su Vida, a VHS
copy of the music videos from Movimiento and Step by Step,
an NDEP Food and Activity Tracker,
an NDEP Fat and Calorie Counter, The Road to Health Supplemental
CD-ROM, and The Road to Health Training Guide and Video.
As I said earlier, this video will help trainers conduct
successful workshops using the Road to Health Toolkit.
So have your Road to Health Training Guide handy while
you watch this video.
It will help guide you through the activities and make your
overall training easier.
Although every activity discussed can be found
in the Training Guide, please note that not all activities
in the Road to Health Toolkit and Training Guide are
discussed in the video.
Like the Training Guide, the activities demonstrated in the
video are divided into three areas: type 2 diabetes
and its prevention, healthy eating, and physical
activity and movement.
By the end of the video, you'll be able to:
explain the three main Diabetes Prevention Program behavior
changes that can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes,
increase understanding of the type 2 diabetes
prevention health messages in the toolkit, demonstrate the
activities in the toolkit to increase its use in the
communities you serve, demonstrate how to plan
and develop an effective workshop using
the Road to Health
Toolkit, and describe ways to promote physical activity
and healthy food choices, which can prevent
or delay type 2 diabetes.
