My name is Kate Atkins and I'm a third year student attending the University of Tennessee College of Law
and I work in the legal clinic, particularly in the advocacy clinic under Benjamin Barton.
And I have come to realize that working with the legal clinic and the under privileged populations of Knoxville
is not only a benefit to the community, but I've learned a lot as an individual.
Serving the community is important to me because I realize what it's like not to have that representation
and, particularly, I'm grateful we can provide these services for these individuals
because they have no one to advocate for them in court, in their lives, in their community.
And this really provides an opportunity to speak out against injustice and to advocate for active change.
Whether that's, like I said, in the court room, in their communities, in their lives, we're really there to assist them in raising their own voice
through modeling that in court, teaching them life skills, helping them pick up the pieces
from whatever part of their life that's crumbled. So, it's been an honor for me to serve
along with other students.
