his is video three of how to build a pergola. In the last video, I showed you how to construct
the frame. In this video, I'm going to show you how to lay the roof, from the first sheet
to the last sheet, the fixings, the flushing, the capping and the fascia.
The first step to installing our roof is the battens. The battens sit on top of the rafters
to support our roof. The battens need to be equally spaced apart, along the width of the
pergola.
We screw the battens in at each intersection with the rafters, making sure that we keep
them aligned as we go.
That's it. Once the battens are in place, we need to make sure we put some noise tape
across the top of the battens. Noise tape comes in a 25-meter roll, so we'll apply it.
All we need to do is peel the backing off, and adhere it to the top of our battens.
Then it's time for the roof. Put the first sheet on. Align it with the outside of the
frame. Use every second crest for a fixing, and overlap by two.
Once the roofing is in place, we need to put a fixing on every batten along the length
of the pergola. As you can see, the sheeting sits on top of our noise tape, which helps
to prevent cracking and creaking from the roofing materials.
We need to put our capping on, and then our flushing. The capping is a right angle, polycarbonate
length to run down the side of your pergola. The flushing sits above the roof line, attached
to the house, to help prevent water from seeping in. When applying flushing and capping, make
sure we fix at regular intervals, around 300 to 400 millimetres.
Then we need to put our fascia on. The fascia is a decorative feature to hide the rafters,
but also enhances the stability of the structure. We install the fascia by fastening it to the
ends of our rafters. Work your way down the length of the fascia board, securing it to
each rafter. And Bob's your uncle, the roof is done.
Well, there you go guys, a pergola. It's really not that hard, anyone can do it. It's a space
that you can use all year round. And how good does it look? For further information, head
