GARRETT>> Welcome to Washburn University, home of the Ichabods.
SHELBIE>> In the heart of Topeka, Washburn’s a busy and exciting place
with more than 7,300 students seeking degrees in more than 100 fields.
Hi, my name is Shelbie Konkel.
I'm a junior history and political science major from Haysville, Kansas.
GARRETT>> I’m Garrett Fenley, a sophmore nursing major from Troy, Kansas.
YULI>> And I’m Yuli Armstrong, a sophomore from Spring Hill, Kansas
majoring in psychology and spanish.
We will be your guides as we give you a taste of the Ichabod experience.
GARRETT>> The University gets both its name
and its tuxedo-wearing mascot from a real guy.
In 1868 a wire magnate from Massachusetts named Ichabod Washburn pledged $25,000 to
get three-year-old Lincoln College out of a financial jam.
The college was renamed Washburn in recognition of this pledge.
SHELBIE>> The sports teams were first called the “Sons of Ichabod” in the 1903-04 yearbook
and the student body officially adopted the name in 1948.
The Ichabod is definitely the most unique mascot around,
and we're the only one in the country.
YULI>> This statue, “Mr. Ichabod” by Mark Lundeen,
attempted to bring to life the original Ichabod drawn by Washburn alum and famed graphic artist
Bradbury Thompson.
