>>Helen Hartman: Hi, I’m Helen Hartman. I’m a senior lecturer in kinesiology.
>> I wanted to create a series of instructional videos for the ballroom dance class,
>> so that the students had a source to go to to review the steps that we learned in
each class.
>> and in the event that the students were absent in class, that they were able to review
what they had missed
>> so that they would be prepared when they came into class.
>>Mary Ann Mengel and I worked together on these instructional videos
>>and we sat down over the summer and set up a process or a format
>>that we thought would work well for the videos
>>and then, her and I went into the Beaver Community Center, into the dance studio, and
practiced videotaping some of the steps.
>>The process for videotaping the dance steps involved a partner, and I taught him the steps,
>>and then we met with Mary Ann Mengel, who then videotaped us in the formats that we
had previously discussed.
>> Once I had everything videotaped then I went into the media commons lab
>>and Mary Ann again, helped me with some basic instruction and along with the tutorials
I then began putting the videos together.
>>One of the items that was very important was completing one of the videos before moving
onto the others.
>> So that I established what worked well, what didn’t work well.
>>Once I did that, the rest of the videos, each movie that I made, was completed more
quickly because of learning all the skills and then practicing them each time.
>>In learning how to edit within the iMovie and with the videotapes I asked Mary Ann lots
of questions
>>and I also used the student helpers in the media commons lab and also looked at all of
the tutorials
>>and there were definitely some frantic calls up to the U park help desk.
>> The videos are quite valuable in that I can have the students refer to a particular
source
>>so that they can look outside of class to see how particular steps are done.
>>We can also use these videos in pointing out correct posture,
>>how to recover from mistakes done within a step
>>and just evaluate the overall performance.
>>Student 1: I used the videos a lot to help me memorize the choreography so that I’d
know what I was doing during the test when I was taking them.
>>It also made it a lot easier to practice on my own time without having to schedule
meetings with the teacher that way I could see the steps
>>and she had lines tape on the floor which made it really easy to see where her feet
were going.

>>Student 2: Even though I attended all the classes, memorizing all the steps was kind
of difficult,
>>so having them available at home to remember the steps to be able to come in the next day
and practice was a big help
>>because you could tell the students who didn’t, well they were more lost than those
who did.
>>Helen Hartman: The whole process for the TLI grant has been a very positive process
and a wonderful learning experience for me
>> and I know as time goes on I’ll be able to use the knowledge of putting the iMovies
together in working with other projects in other classes.
