Managing a lifetime of digital photos and videos can be a daunting task, but the SmugMug
ORGANIZER makes it a breeze. The ORGANIZER is the place to add, remove and manage all
of your site's contents - create and nest custom folders, web pages and new galleries.
Edit photos and apply settings for security and privacy - upload, download, move and delete
content individually or in bulk, at every level of your website. Your entire catalog
is at your fingertips and under your control in the Organizer's central, flexible, intuitive
interface.
Organizer Basics When you're logged in to your SmugMug account,
you'll see the ADMIN bar at the top of every page on your website. And no worries, the
admin options are not visible to anyone but you - your guests see your website like this...
To open the Organizer, click ORGANIZE. If you're brand new to SmugMug, you'll start
off with the default GALLERY of sample images we added when you opened your account. If
you opted to upload photos straight away, the SAMPLE GALLERY will contain your images,
otherwise the gallery will still contain the sample photos. We'll remove these immediately
following your first upload session.
Migrating users, and those who've been using SmugMug over a period of time, should have
a well populated Organizer displaying their previously loaded galleries and photos, and
folders reflecting hierarchy in sync with Legacy SmugMug's Category and Subcategory
system of organization.
Getting to know the Organizer The green bar across the top of the page let's
you know you're in the organizer. To exit the organizer and return to your website,
click DONE at the upper right corner, and we'll take you directly to the area of your
website that you were viewing from within the organizer. For example, if you've highlighted
the ADMIN, or root icon, in the left column, exiting brings you to your website's homepage.
If you were viewing a gallery of photos, DONE takes you directly into that gallery on your
site.
The next line displays your site content's breadcrumbs; the PATH back your website's
root from the area you are viewing in your site's hierarchy. From the admin root, you
can add up to SEVEN layers of site hierarchy using folders and galleries. The deeper you
go, the longer the trail of breadcrumbs. You can step back to view any previous level,
or return to your site's TOP LEVEL, by selecting the appropriate breadcrumb.
ORGANIZER TOOLS Now we're getting to the good stuff - below
the BREADCRUMBS you'll find the Organizer TOOL bar, here's where the magic happens.
The CREATE button opens the tools to create new Galleries & Folders. If you're a POWER
or PRO level account owner, or you're still in the FREE TRIAL period, you'll also see
the option to create custom web PAGES.
Next, you'll see the SETTINGS button - the options and tools displayed under SETTINGS
vary depending on the item of focus in the ORGANIZER.
When the site root is selected, SETTINGS will appear grayed out.
Highlighting a FOLDER activates SETTINGS for folders. Clicking SETTINGS while a folder
is highlighted opens the SETTINGS options for the selected folder. As you edit and save
these settings, the selections will be inherited by ALL FOLDERS nested within the PARENT folder,
the one you clicked settings on.
You can adjust the SETTINGS for multiple folders simultaneously by highlighting the target
folders in the preview panel. To select folders, LEFT CLICK to highlight the folders you wish
to edit - then click SETTINGS and edit as desired.
One tool to rule them all? Choose SELECT ALL in the ORGANIZER TOOLBAR to instantly highlight
all items in the preview panel!
Highlighting a GALLERY activates the GALLERY OPTIONS - and you'll notice that the CREATE
button becomes an UPLOAD button, allowing you to add photos and videos to the currently
viewed gallery collection - And clicking SETTINGS now opens the GALLERY SETTINGS tool. From
here you can adjust all of the settings for a particular gallery. From editing the title
and description and changing the security and privacy levels, to shopping, social media
and appearance, as well as managing and applying Quick Settings, you have ultimate control
over how your galleries are presented publicly and privately.
In the same manner that Folder settings can be applied in bulk, so too for GALLERIES.
To change the settings on multiple galleries in one move, first highlight the target galleries
and then click the SETTINGS button to open the BULK GALLERY SETTINGS tools.
Not seeing an ACTIVE SETTINGS button after choosing multiple folders or galleries? You
can only edit one or the other in a single action. Check to see if you've inadvertently
highlighted a combination of the two, and uncheck the errant selection to enable the
SETTINGS function.
Okay. That brings us to the PHOTO and GALLERY tools. The VIEW, WRENCH, SHARE and DOWNLOAD
icons remain grayed out until you've opened a gallery, or highlighted a photo or video
in the preview panel. Double click on a gallery to display the images contained within - the
WRENCH, DOWNLOAD and TRASH icons become ACTIVE.
Clicking the WRENCH reveals the GALLERY TOOLS. Through this section, you can access the Captions
and Keyword tools for the photos in the gallery, you can adjust THUMBNAILS, and if you have
a PRO level account, you'll also find the WATERMARKING tools are accessed through this
section.
IMAGE TOOLS are inactive at this point as we haven't selected a photo yet. Click the
DOWNLOAD icon to initiate a bulk GALLERY DOWNLOAD, again, the single image option remains inactive
until you select a photo.
Finally we have the DELETE icon, clicking this queues the GALLERY and it's contents
for deletion. No worries, you can't accidentally delete a gallery, if you click the trash icon
we'll ask you to confirm before proceeding.
This would be a good time to point out that selecting DELETE at higher levels, on folders,
will initiate permanent deletion of ALL contents within the folder. This includes subfolders,
pages, galleries and all photos and videos - it's good practice to exercise caution when
initiating DELETION while a FOLDER is selected in the preview panel.
Let's move from the GALLERY as a whole to single photos and videos. Selecting any image
in the preview panel activates the PHOTO TOOLS.
Click the VIEW icon, the EYE, to open a photo in the LIGHTBOX. You can also open a photo
in LIGHTBOX by double clicking the thumbnail image in the preview panel.
Clicking the TOOL icon, the WRENCH, reveals the now active IMAGE TOOLS, which include
Hide, Rotate, Crop and Color Effects.
The SHARE icon opens the PUBLISH TO FACEBOOK tool, which will upload the photo directly
from SmugMug onto your personal or business Facebook site according to your selected preferences.
Along with gallery save, the DOWNLOAD tool now displays the option to save the individual
original file back to your computer.
And the TRASH icon provides the option to permanently delete this single photo or video
from the gallery collection.
Keeping form with folders and galleries, you can target multiple photos for bulk application
of available actions - for example, to HIDE a selection of images in a gallery from PUBLIC
VIEW, left click to select the photos, then apply the HIDE action in the SETTINGS MENU.
Arranging photos in a gallery, galleries in a folder, or folders and pages within folders,
can be done in several ways, placement in the ORGANIZER correlates with the order these
items display on your website.
To move a photo, gallery, page or folder to another area of your hierarchy, mouse over
the preview thumb, hold down the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON to 'grab hold,' drag the item to the
target area and release the left mouse button to 'drop' the file into place.
If you prefer, you can opt for an AUTO sort by according to several parameters, the options
will vary according to the items in the preview window: folder, pages and galleries, or photos
in a gallery.
Once a sort order is chosen, we'll instantly arrange the items in the panel and on your
website in real time. And you can opt for ascending or descending order by toggling
the sequence button.
A great time saver is to choose an auto sort option to arrange en masse, and then dial
in your display order using the Drag & Drop function.
To the immediate right of the SORT field you'll find the FILENAME display button. This function
is active when you are viewing a gallery of photos, and enables you to toggle the display
of filenames on and off in the organizer's preview panel. This is a great feature when
searching for a specific file in a large collection.
