Hi, this is Mel Majoros, I am the cancer warrior. I have a podcast and a blog and I would like
to share with you my breast cancer diagnosis story.
So, I never even thought that I would get cancer. I work at a radio station and we do
a lot of station events and one of the events that I went to that summer in 2007 was the
American Cancer Society Relay for Life which was a 24-hour event focusing on raising awareness
and funds for cancer survivors and you know, I went and listened to the stories and met
a lot of survivors and it was just very, a moving heartfelt experience and it wasn't
something that I had ever thought about or thought about that I would ever have cancer,
never really entered my mind. I was adopted and that wasn't one of the things that that
give you like a little sheet about, information about your family history and that wasn't
anything that was listed on the family history. So the event, the American Cancer Society
Relay was in June. Late August, I found a lump on my breast, right around here. I went
to the doctors, they said, you know, we should get a biopsy, check it out, never thought
it was. No one ever mentioned cancer to me, did the biopsy, it was one of those things
where, I had the biopsy on Tuesday, called the doctor on Thursday, she said, the nurse
answered the phone and said, we don't have your results. Five minutes later, the doctor
called and said, how soon can you get here and you know, at that point, once a doctor
calls you, it is like, well, you know, they are not asking you to eat any leftover brownies
from the daughter's bake sale. So, I pretty much knew, it was cancer at that point and
the doctor who did my surgery said, he has only been surprised by a handful of diagnoses
and I was one of them. So, it is very important to be vigilant about your health, you know,
there is something that you see that is different or kind of you know, that is unusual, may
be a rash or whatever. Always go to your doctor, never think, well, I will just let it wait
because somethings just should not wait.
