Hello Eva,
you have also been invited by Philip Metten
to participate in the universal artwork called Innercoma?
What was your role in this?
I created and made the eyes, both on the front and in the courtyard.
And is that something you usually do?
That is really an element of it... I mostly make drawings.
It was developed in agreement with Philip,
who really wanted me to make something in my own style.
And it is also an element that comes back very often in my drawings.
What do these eyes mean for you,
or why do you always use them?
I think eyes are really fascinating.
The reason for this is because
symbolically they repel evil but also attract good,
so the meaning is in fact bifold.
I have always been fascinated by the eye of Fatima...
And by the power of eyes in different cultures.
On the other hand it also goes back to the past.
I still remember my grandmother's kitchen...
Above her kitchen door hang a small frame with the eye of god,
saying "god sees you, don't swear".
I found that very powerful and impressive as a child,
and it always stayed with me.
Lastly I am also interested in the other bifold meaning of eyes
because you can see the expression of a person in them,
so that refers to an introspective aspect...
And at the same time a person can also look at the outside world with his eyes.
That bifold meaning and that power...
And how does the cooperation with Philip work?
Because now you work for an other artist...
You should see it as a process.
On the one hand Philip has always said that I should do my think,
but with lots of conversations that were very organic.
He also gave a lot of references and talked about the character of his work...
That way I got access to it without having to
compromise or make a special assignment.
That meant I could stay very true to myself
and was able to participate as a part of the whole process...
