ANNOUNCER: Matt Muenster is on the hunt.
What are you guys up to?
We're looking to redo our master bath.
And you're starting with a toilet paper holder?
I remodel bathrooms. I do it on TV.
Oh, really?
Are you game for that?
Are you serious?
Yes, Matt's dead serious.
I don't think you can do it in 3 days.
I've done a hundred of these things.
Trust me, I can do this.
Today he has brought the crew to find one shopper
who will get all of this.
A bright and feminine space
with an indestructible herringbone vinyl floor,
a large quartz sink,
tons of storage accessed by a rolling ladder
and one super sweet shower
with some eye-popping tile, and all of it for free.
Are we on TV?
Not currently, but you might be.
MATT: What are you working on?
Professional contractor Matt Muenster stakes out
home improvement stores looking for do-it-yourselfers
who need an extra hand from a pro.
Are you serious?
What they don't know is he's gonna transform
their simple project into a total bathroom makeover.
It's like winning the home improvement jackpot.
Kapow!!!
Get ready for a bath crash.
You're in the bathroom section,
Just moseying through.
No, we are not.
Yeah.
Catch you off guard?
Okay.
What's your bathroom look like?
Oh.
We have two of them, both are pretty ugly.
Would you like to see my picture?
Why do you have--why do people have pictures of this?
How many bathrooms in the house?
Our main one on our main level where all the bedrooms are,
so we all share that one.
It's not pretty.
It's okay. Two of you and--
Two more of these and one lucky--
Husband.
He is with my other kids somewhere.
Let's just see if we can find him.
You'll have to explain things to him because--
Oh, I might ask you to do it.
I want to see what you got.
I don't even know.
You know how he works better than I do.
Hey, how about that? He's walking this way.
I've got the lowdown on your living situation.
And I'm feeling for you.
And you have one bathroom that you all share?
And it ain't big.
I am normally looking to remodel someone's bathroom.
If it's a good fit for the show,
we talk about what it should be.
And then I get really creative and try to figure out
how a small bathroom works for the six of you.
( all laugh )
We build it in three days,
then we get out of your life again.
And then this hopefully all gets better.
If you can give me three days.
I don't know.
I think that sounds awesome.
If you're cool with it, let's go to your house.
Right now?
Well, when you're done paying for stuff.
You got to buy it. You can't just steal the stuff.
All right, I'll follow you.
All right, sounds great.
Bye bye bye bye!
Welcome!
You didn't tell me about the lake! I get it now.
We're gonna show him our bathroom.
Why wouldn't you?
Ha ha ha ha ha!
Well, ceiling height isn't a problem.
Well, come on in, family. Let's see what this looks like.
( Matt whistles )
And this is how we do it.
But it's gonna be.
But it's going to be, so the toilet in the open for everybody...
The height of the ceiling is nice
because it makes it feel like
we are not completely cramped in here.
Yeah, but it's really just like
it's space where you need it least.
I think challenge number one in here is gonna be storage.
Well, you got what, stack of drawers, a couple doors.
What's hard, and it's hidden by our door,
This.
MATT: And it's just busting.
NANCY: It is. It is.
God, I would love to make that toilet more private.
If you could get two people in here,
if someone was going to the bathroom
and the other someone else could still use this space,
you would get through the morning faster.
Let's talk about no tub, only shower.
Showers are a luxury.
Okay.
It needs to be something that obviously is functional for the kids.
Yes.
And something that you would enjoy long-term.
It's just a dream to enjoy taking a shower.
Okay.
I'm just drawn to things
that look very feminine and beautiful.
It's gonna be a girl's bathroom.
God, I have to approach this from the standpoint
of a girl's bathroom.
I can't wait to hear what Matt comes back with.
NANCY: I have no idea.
I can't even imagine what he might come up with.
MATT: Bath crash on the lake.
Not so bad.
( honking )
( cheering )
Very glad to see all of you.
Meet Duane from The Chuba Company.
He's my contractor.
Plumbers, electricians-- everyone we need.
Let's get going, let's get inside,
let's show you what we are doing
and let's fill that Dumpster.
Let's go.
All right. Ready to see, yes?
Yes.
Fully aware this probably has very little
to do with you, yes?
Okay.
That's what happens when you have four girls,
five in the house-- you make sacrifices.
But I did give you a little somethin' somethin'.
Oh, my gosh.
Matt's plan accommodates both Glenn and Nancy.
Starting with a giant clear glass steam shower
with a bench,
lots of shelves and sexy extras like chromotherapy,
aromatherapy and music.
This bathroom is about the steam shower,
it's about storage, and it's about,
from this point forward, girls.
Okay?
I've given you the lead-off. Enjoy the steam shower.
It's gonna get a little pink and cream from here, okay?
At the vanity, storage galore is topped off
with a quartz ramp sink with dual faucets.
Above a one-of-a-kind custom mirror frame.
and finally not one but two makeup stations.
Yes.
From that point forward,
you're just going to have to tag out.
But the real ingenuity is the way
Matt's using the high ceiling for extra storage.
Behind a sliding door is a private water closet and a ladder.
Storage cubbies up high
are accessed by the library ladder
and shining over it all, the perfect custom chandelier.
You got all this volume
but you don't have a lot of footprint.
So we need to use the volume cleverly,
and I think this is.
I love it. I love it.
I'm so excited.
Let's get eye glasses, let's get masks,
let's get gloves, we have boots,
we got everything to keep you guys from getting hurt.
Actually, hop up on the countertop.
Seriously?
One, two, three, up. There you go.
Feels good, right?
Yes, it does.
Oh, my God! Really, it slipped out of my hand.
Hey, we got two pieces now.
One, two, three.
Let's find more stuff to smash.
I don't know.
It's a pretty good sink.
There!
I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy breaking stuff,
demolishing stuff, and I just love it.
All right, let's set this thing up.
I was thinking tank.
To be fair, I've had some practice.
Now when you kick, that toilet may come at you. So try to kick high.
Okay, we probably shouldn't hold hands, because I'm gonna try--
Okay, ready?
Coming up.
We're gonna fill in this middle area
with all of this random trim.
Matt's got a plan for a custom frame, but will Nancy dig it?
I think it sounds interesting.
I knew you were gonna go with "interesting."
And then Matt proves it's not only about sweat
and power tools on Bath Crashers.
Yeah, not bad. That's an arrival, huh?
Nancy and Glenn knew
their bathroom was far too cramped
to contain them and their four growing girls.
They are starting to once in a while kick each other out
to use the bathroom and--
Exactly.
So this morning licensed contractor Matt Muenster
demoed the space
and now it's on its way to being far more functional
for a family of six.
Seeing all the family, friends and everyone come together
with a common goal,
it's really amazing how much you can accomplish
in such a short period of time.
You're wanna grab those two bags?
Okay.
Don't look inside, it's a secret.
Follow me.
The first project of the day
is a custom frame for the mirror.
Just throw it up on the table haphazardly.
Don't worry, you are not gonna--
Well-- Jeez. Easy.
Here's what we're doing.
The frame will be wide with a shallow trough
running through the center of it.
We're gonna fill in this middle area with chunks
of all of this random trim.
What do you think?
I think it sounds...
Interesting.
I knew you were gonna go with "interesting."
The alternative is a boring mirror frame.
To begin, they cut the boards to make the trough.
That actually couldn't be much better.
Thank you.
Then they use a Kreg Jig to drill two pilot holes.
The jig lets them hide the screws
so the corners are clean.
So the screws go through at an angle,
we join this board to this board right here,
they lock in tight.
Whoo.
Good. Good. Good. Good. Good.
Next they cut the boards
for the interior edge of the trough.
So here you're starting to get the idea.
Yeah, exactly.
So this is the trough where everything's gonna lay.
So now we've got height inside, we got height outside,
we can just work our way around.
Voila.
Cool.
I think that we should get some paint,
and at the very least,
paint the inside of this trough all the way around.
Trough painted, it's time to get artistic.
We're feeling pretty good about this in the corner, right?
NANCY: Yes, I like that.
So do I.
Look at that, fits just like a glove.
Yeah, that's the stuff right there.
We got this guy finishing strong.
What do you think?
I absolutely love it.
While the electricians and plumbers have been busy
with the rough-ins...
Glenn's helping cut down wood for framing.
Put this one against the rock and nail this one in there.
GLENN: First time ever framing.
You know, with a little bit of guidance
from the professionals, we had a lot of fun.
Then drywall goes up to end day 1
and Matt gives a little preview of things to come.
Remember I told you vinyl planks?
These are vinyl planks.
We're goon do this pattern.
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
Okay.
Get that thing painted for me tonight...
Okay.
and start up again in the morning.
Sounds good.
Thank you.
Day 2 starts with Matt and Duane arriving by boat.
Yeah.
You go first. I can jump further than you can.
Once on land, they split up and start the day's projects.
Duane begins with a privacy door for the toilet area.
You have to just go really slow,
just keep constant pressure up against this fence.
This will be a sliding pocket door
and to make it feel less heavy,
they're adding a custom glass insert.
Okay, so we're just gonna slide this in,
and let me know when your fingers are on the ends.
Nancy and Glenn install the stops
that hold the glass panel in place,
and the new door is done.
Okay, there we go.
Up in the bathroom...
Right on this edge.
...Matt and Glenn tackle the floor.
You want to start here, maybe finish this corner,
work your way back in this room, that's awesome.
The vinyl strips are going to be laid in a herringbone pattern
straight down the center of the room.
So measuring the correct angle is key to this project.
MATT: Let me get this squared up here.
There we go. Put it up toward me.
There you go.
Now we'll set it back down.
That's great, perfect.
It's coming together, it looks durable.
It is durable,
and it's gonna be softer and warmer under your foot.
Up next...
We're gonna put this up first.
A whole new way to build a brick wall.
MATT: Stick 'em, stack 'em,
let 'em go all the way up the wall.
Maybe if we put three of them up above and two down below.
And then Matt's got a simple plan
to dress up a door.
It's cutesy either way.
For Matt's favorite projects and tips,
head on over to the Crashers page
at diynetwork.com/crashers.
There's gonna be paint, there's gonna be glitter.
This is a big chandelier in the ceiling.
It's the middle of day 2 of Nancy and Glenn's
girl-friendly bath crash
and the small space they share with their four daughters
is already looking much better.
We snuck up there last night and we were showing the girls
what we had done, and they were amazed.
But there's one wall that hasn't been touched yet
and Matt's about to change that.
Back wall-- the wall we haven't painted,
the wall we've done nothing with.
This is why.
The plan is to turn the wall into a show stopper
stacking brick all the way to the ceiling.
We got full pieces, we got half pieces.
We got a lot of varying colors,
which is kind of what brick is, right?
But while the brick looks traditional,
the way they are going to lay it isn't.
These sheets are what goes up on the wall as well.
We're gonna put this up first. See this little ledge?
What do you think that's about the right size for?
GLENN: I'm hoping it's gonna hold the brick.
Yeah. Follow me.
These boards should cut the project time in half.
All right, so we're pretty good right about there.
They screw the pieces right into the wall
and then they're ready to go.
Let's start in that corner.
Get that first course in, adjust as we need to,
and then once that's in, it's just boom, boom, boom.
The adhesive goes on easily and the metal guides
ensure the bricks line up straight.
GLENN: The brick on the back of the bathroom wall
was a complete surprise to me.
I've never seen a bathroom that has brick on a wall like that.
Once the brick wall is in place,
Duane and his team can get busy installing the cubbies.
The only way to gain storage is to go up,
so the units are mounted above the sink and shower.
They will be accessed by a rolling library ladder.
Come down a little bit.
While the cubbies go in,
Glenn pitches in down below on tiling.
So just what we do is butt it in there?
Yeah, butt it in there.
The tiles are uniquely three-dimensional
and need to be laid in a specific pattern.
When they are done they'll add
depth and texture to the shower wall.
My biggest takeaway from this whole project is that
there are some things that are just purely an art to do,
this being one of them.
In the backyard, Matt has a one-panel door and a plan.
What we're gonna do is panelize this door
the way we want it and then I want to figure out
something cool for inside here.
Something to apply to this to make it a little more decorative,
little more girly.
The trim pieces are cut on a chop saw,
then they begin assembling the first rectangle.
I want you to put one right there,
now pull the trigger-- awesome.
NANCY: Glenn and I are having such a fun time working with Matt.
He is so much fun to banter back and forth with,
something my husband and I love to do.
Look at that.
We're just in time for another consult there, Glenn.
Maybe if we put three of them in up above and two down below.
I personally like the separation of having the two and the three.
With the layout set,
they finish trimming out the door
and get final approval.
You want to come over here, girls, and check it out?
So it was all flat before and now we added this and this,
and this and this,
and this and this and this and this.
What do you guys think? Pretty--?
Cool.
Still to come.
Let's kill the bird, shall we?
Matt executes a bird.
Bye bye, bird.
Ah!
The reveal leaves Nancy speechless.
You--you-- all you're doing is gasping.
If someone's showering, it's hard to get ready
The chaos that ensues?
during the chaos and everything.
Nancy and Glenn had a long list of complaints
about their small bathroom,
but on the morning of day 3 with plenty of storage
going in for the family of six
and a giant steam shower in the works,
it's time for licensed contractor Matt Muenster
to focus on the details.
We have a bird cage.
With no bird.
Gladly.
And no bottom.
Bird got away.
But we do have a mini chandelier.
Ah.
That slips inside a bird cage
which we figure out how to wire,
because right now there's another bird in my way.
Bye bye, bird.
Don't touch it for a little while.
It's 1,000 degrees.
While the top is still warm,
they use a hole bit to thread a brass ring.
The chandelier's chain will attach to the ring.
This is going pink as well.
Mm-hmm.
Too much pink is just enough.
Once the cage is the proper shade of pink,
the guys add the lights.
So right about in here is about the height I want it.
Matt attaches the chain and threads the wiring through.
Here we go.
Hold that guy right like that.
Okay.
There we go.
Just a matter of patience I don't have.
Bulbs going in through the door.
Going through the door, it's the only way to go.
See if you can double-joint it in the elbow.
My girls are gonna wonder where the bird is.
Well, tell them there's no bottom on the cage, bird's gone.
This is quartz, which means with girls with makeup,
if you're gonna do a white countertop, go quartz.
It's also heavy which means we're gonna get
out of the way because they're ready to install it.
I just wanted you guys to see it in light of day
'cause I'm about to kick you
out the bathroom for a little while.
With the coast clear,
the crew pushes forward for the upcoming reveal.
Trim is painted, Matt builds the library ladder...
and the mirror with its custom frame is installed.
Okay. That's not bad.
Finally, each girl picks a handle
for their personal drawer.
I like this one.
With evening setting in, it's time for the reveal.
NANCY: It was just a few days ago what my bathroom looked like.
It was really narrow, really, really tall
and that's kind of all you saw.
There was a huge tub,
really no work space for my girls to get ready,
brush their teeth.
It just did not flow well.
Come on all the way. Come on all the way.
Oh, my gosh.
Now it's a fully functional and feminine room for six.
There are many luxurious amenities
and plenty of space for the entire crew.
Look at that.
( gasps )
You-- you-- all you're doing is gasping.
This door separates the toilet area
which was the other big deal
with all of you using this bathroom up here.
So that someone else can be in here getting ready
or taking a shower in that sick, sick, sick shower.
It's completely sealed off, steam,
there's a hand sprayer in there,
there's a giant rain shower head,
speakers and remote control.
And remote control.
You're kidding me!
Steam shower takes a little while to get steamy, right?
So if you are thinking about it in the morning
while you hit the snooze, hit that.
By the time you hit that, snooze is done,
you come back in here that sucker's full of steam.
Oh, my gosh.
GLENN: Look at the mirror.
"Happy girls are the prettiest girls."
Aww. Where did that come from?
I know it is, isn't it?
There's plenty of reflection.
Nancy had a picture frame in our old bathroom
that basically said that, so clearly Matt captured that
from our old bath and carried it onto the new one.
So that makes it even that much more special.
Oh, my goodness.
That's ladder storage. See these bars up here?
That's what we hook the ladder on.
It just rolls left and right, scamper up the ladder,
grab your stuff, scamper back down.
Pretty good, right?
I love all the projects that we did together.
Those are memories, aren't they?
GLENN: Bird cage light, the mirror frame,
I think they're just wonderful.
I love everything but those are the things
that we're gonna really remember.
And that's why we build some stuff
and don't just buy everything.
So much of us went into the bathroom,
and little touches with the girls
picking out the little knobs for their individual drawers.
You guys were great.
It was wonderful.
We are out of here. Enjoy this.
You, get out of the shower. Let's take a walk.
See you, guys.
NANCY: And it was just a place of beauty and comfort
and warmth and functionality.
GLENN: It turned out just beyond my wildest dreams.
This is great!
It's so great!
