EISU provides insessional English support to all international students whose first
language is not English.
For example, we run free classes every day in terms 1 and 2 in aspects such as Grammar,
Study skills, Academic Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Communication skills and vocabulary
You can also request free one-to-one tutorials all year round to receive individual help
and advice about your academic English.
As you can see from our Intranet, we also offer day trips, classes for the partners
of international students and staff and a range of other services that improve the international
student's experience at the University of Birmingham.
Your first step should now be to do our online English self-assessment which will enable
you to identify your English language strengths , your areas for improvement and how EISU
can help you improve your English. You'll find a link to the CANVAS test environment
on our Intranet pages. It will be shown again at the end of this video and in the Youtube
description. You'll then need to log in to the University's
CANVAS learning environment. Add your usual University username and remember that your
password is case sensitive. Once logged in to CANVAS you need to find
the EISU English for International Students Unit Insessional Support pages -- find the
courses tab -- after clicking the arrow you'll probably find that you've been enrolled on
a number of CANVAS courses related to your programme. You should be able to find the
English for International Students unit's insessional course when you scroll down. If
you can't see it, follow the instructions on our intranet pages to contact us and let
us know there's a problem.
Once in our course, you'll see a home page similar to this one. Although this may change
slightly during the year, the English Self-assessment will always be the top left icon.
Now simply click this icon and follow the assessment instructions on screen.
