What's going on guys? Today I'm taking a look at the Oculus Rift Crystal Cove Edition and
just a brief run through its specs. So here we go.
First up the display. The Crystal Cove Edition features an impressive OLED 1080p display
at 60fps. This provides a lot sharper and brighter images immersing the gameplay as
well as halving the latency time. The original or previous version had a still pretty neat,
720p LED display however caused dizziness or nausea with some users. In my opinion,
the Crystal Cove is a drastic and needed improvement and just ups the gameplay of the device.
So next the weight. The Crystal Cove Edition will weighs in at around 380 grams due to
the extra sensors however is still incredibly light compared to some others. The previous
Oculus weighed in a very comfortable 340 grams which in my opinion is shockingly light. Both
these devices are still pretty light and can easily be worn for a couple of hours.
Now the main part, the virtual reality. So the Crystal Cove has a Field of View of 110°
and now has positional head tracking. The device can now see head movements such as
leaning and looking over and under objects. For me this is another great improvement however
it is limited in range. The original Rift also has a 110° Field of View and tracks
both vertical and horizontal movements. Both these have an incredible Field of View and
really enhance the experience. For the Crystal Cove Edition, you will need to connect an
external camera for the extra features but it shouldn't cause much of an issue.
So with the Platform and Games now. Both these devices work with all Mac OS X, Windows and
Linux flawlessly. However, Oculus are hoping to expand their product to game consoles such
as the PS4 and Xbox One as well as mobile but will need support from these companies.
In my opinion, I think it will be great if they do manage to pull this off as applying
to a much wider audience. At the moment, there are over 100 games and apps designed primarily
for the Oculus and but that number will keep growing. Some of the major titles include
Team Fortress 2, Mirrors Edge and Minecraft. You are also able to watch HD videos and movies
with an app called "VR Cinema". To develop your own games, there is an open SDK and development
kit for 300 US Dollars or £180. So now the future... Oculus are hoping to
launch their device by the end of this year as well as create a wireless edition too.
They are also hoping to expand to mobile and consoles but they are still a long way from
that. The Rift is already being used by companies such as NASA for controlling robots from long
distances and are hoping to use it for a Mars Rover of some sort. Medics are using it to
cure mental illnesses as well as education and curing racism.
But where do you think the Rift will lead and why? Drop a comment below of what you
think along with any criticism or ideas for a next video. On screen feel free to check
out my other videos or follow on social media. I also wanted to say thanks for almost 100
subs! Anyway thanks for watching, Peace Out!
