Many patients will come to me having symptoms - such as being too sleepy during the day,
being unable to sleep at night, or doing odd behaviors during their sleep, such as sleepwalking.
I view my role as not just helping patients sleep better - but helping them have better
health in the short and long term - but also as a public safety role. So for example, if
someone has significant excessive daytime sleepiness, they may put themselves at risk
for accidents and injuries, but they may put the general public at risk. So one of my greatest
pleasures was having some of my research cited as a foundation for the new Federal Aviation
Administration's rules governing sleep and mandatory sleep times for all airline pilots
in the United States. So as a sleep researcher and a sleep clinician, we're trying to improve
and protect the health and safety of individual patients, but also the general public at large.
