In this video, we will discuss the occupational hazard called: Silicosis.
At Titus our employees are the reason we succeed. For that reason, we take your safety seriously
and strive to communicate the safety hazards you can face while on the job.
Silicosis is a form of lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust.
Crystalline silica dust is a basic component of soil, sand, granite, and most other types
of rock. It is also used as a blasting agent. Silica dust, as part of your job, is contained
in the dust created from grinding concrete. Dry grinding is only performed in small areas,
with a hand grinder, when you need reach areas close to a wall or corner. All of Titus' primary
grinding is performed wet, to keep you and our customers safe.
Silicosis is a progressive, debilitating, incurable, and often fatal lung disease.
Some effects of silicosis are: Lung cancer, Bronchitis, Tuberculosis, and
renal disease.
Watch for these symptoms of silicosis: Shortness of breath, Chest pain, Fever, Nonproducing
cough, Respiratory failure, and fatigue.
We use a wet grind method on all of our jobs to protect you by reducing silica dust and
the chance of Silicosis.
When you have to dry grind, you are required to wear protective gear.
There are two types of respirator we use at Titus.
This is the N-100. This respirator filters 99.97 percent of airborne
particulates. It requires a fit test to ensure it is secured
and working properly. If you have facial hair, you are required to keep it trimmed and tidy.
Unkempt facial hair could compromise the safety of the mask.
This is the mask that is required on all team members when ANYONE is dry grinding.
This is the N-95 This respirator filters 95 percent of airborne
particulates. The N-95 is not approved for dry grinding and does not filter silica dust.
Some tips to protect yourself: Do not eat, drink, or smoke near crystalline
silica dust. Always wash your hands and face before eating,
drinking, or smoking away from the exposed area.
At Titus, our goal is to do our best today and improve on that tomorrow. Safety is a
big part of that. If you have any doubts on the job whether the conditions are safe, please
contact someone right away.
Always be safe on the job!
