Reporter>> Hi Kevin and Maureen. You know, it is hard to imagine what our lives would
be like without Facebook. Without all tose likes... without all those status updates...
And tonight we take a look back at how Facebook has changed our lives.
RIT freshman Charlotte Deering was only 8 years old when Facebook came out. She doesn't
remember what life was like without it. Charlotte>> I was new in 8th grade and most
people had been going there since 6th grade and I wanted to meet new people and the only
way was through Facebook Reporter>> Charlotte sees the good and the
bad in the social media... a way to connect...or disconnect. Geoffrey Ackerman says it's a
way of life. Geoffery>> You are always up to date with
what people are thinking, what people are doing. You don't necessarily care, but you
are scrolling and you kinda see what people are up to.
Reporter>> What was once exclusive to students - now has an older following.
Geoffery>> My mom just recently got a Facebook which is really weird. Definitely seeing the
older generation kinda catching on and seeing that it is a better tool, more so than just
"those kids on Facebook divulging their personal information".
Reporter>> Those older people include Juan and Maria Contreras. It's a connection for
their international family. Juan>> That is a beautiful picture with the
entire family Reporter>> But more importantly it helped build their brand - juan and maria's
empanada stop at the Public Market. Juan>> I think it has been a blessing,it's
been a huge blessing. Because you figure, advertising whether in any media is very expensive. But
Facebook is basically word mouth. It's people telling other people. That's how we have grown
to sell over 1000 empanada every Saturday - every 8 hours.
Reporter>> Social Media Expert Mike Johansson says Facebook connects, stores our memories
- and 10 years later - it's still here Johansson>> It's a very important part of
our lives and no doubt about that. Whether it's a good, great, or maybe slightly annoying
part of our lives, that's individual choice. Reporter>> And if you are curious to see just
how much time you have actually wasted on Facebook - well there is an online app that
will calculate all the time you've wasted... turns out I have wasted 38 days, 19 hours
and 6 minutes of my life... just on Facebook. Mo and Kevin... your turn ...
