Making crafts with your children in class helps develop their creativity.
This interactive activity has the added bonus of developing your children’s language skills.
So, let’s make party invitations!
Divide you class into pairs or groups of three.
Tell them that they are going to have a party and need to make invitations to ask their
friends to come.
They need to choose where they will have the party.
Write this word on the board.
Ask the children for any ideas and encourage them to be imaginative.
They might say: in a tree, or under the sea, or in a castle, or on a ship with pirates.
Hand out your invitation cards which are simply a large piece of paper or card with the words
“where” and “when” on the inside.
Next, hand out coloring pens and pencils for the children to make their invitations.
Encourage them to say “Can I have a pencil please” and “thank you” as they take
the materials.
The children now choose together where they will have their party.
They draw and color a picture of it together on the correct side of the invitation.
Next, the children must choose a time to have their party.
It might be 1 o’clock, 4 o’clock – any time they choose.
Write a couple of examples on the board so the children have something to help them.
Now, they talk to their friend and choose the time.
They need to use a pencil to write their time.
This will look different depending on what age and level you are working with.
Once the children have finished, ask them to give their invitation to the group to their
left.
Do this one at a time.
Prompt them to ask, “Can you come to our party?”
“Where is it?”
“On the moon.”
“When is it?”
“At 8 o’clock.”
“Yes, please! Thank you.”
Continue with the next group of children.
The children will love hearing each other’s wonderful ideas and enjoy the fun of talking
about parties
