Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet kicks off
the roadside mowing season, sprucing up
roadways in preparation Kentucky Derby.
Crews will pick up litter and mow along major
Louisville-area routes, including Interstate 65 to
Elizabethtown, I-64 to Lexington and I-71 to the
Carroll County line.
They also will be cleaning up along I-264 and
I-265 – better known as the Watterson
Expressway and the Gene Snyder Freeway.
The May to October mowing season will include four
mowing cycles along Kentucky’s urban expressways.
Three cuttings are planned along most other highways,
including rural interstates, parkways and state routes.
The interstate mowing contracts include litter removal.
The cabinet spends roughly $25 million annually
for mowing and litter removal statewide.
About 75 percent of the work is performed by contractors.
The Transportation Cabinet will have a
presence at this year’s Derby Celebration,
held the morning of May 2nd on the
grounds of the state Capitol in Frankfort.
The cabinet’s booth will include hands-on activities to
introduce kids to the basic engineering concepts
used in highway building.
Information about the Safe Routes to School
Program will also be available.
The Office of Highway Safety will stage demonstrations
with a rollover simulator and fatal vision goggles.
And visitors will have a chance to meet Vince
and Larry, the crash test dummies,
and the Drive Smart Bear.
