Letters
Letters form words; words have meaning Lined straight and neat on pages gleaming
In rows like soldiers or marching musicians Words give us pictures and definitions
They help us, inform us, and make us laugh Or shame us, blame us, and cut us in half
Letters form words and words have power And we use them well in our ivory towers
Whether doctors, teachers or politicians We spin them and twist them like grand magicians
Some use words' power to invoke pity While others rhyme words and verses witty
In Poems, lyrics, and little ditties. Words can constrain and words can enable
Some words empower, and some words disable
So words have power, without a doubt But so do letters have lots of clout.
When Used as labels to categorize Letters stigmatize and delegitimize
LD, ED, ASD and IDD HI, VI, TBI and SMI
6 and 20 letters baked in a pie Sometimes Make me wonder...who am I?
Rather, let's let letters transform Our words into meanings that are more
Helpful, useful, and even truthful For clients and students elder and youthful
Advocacy, identity, and self-determination Are words that suggest high expectations
No longer are we just service providers But friends and mentors and trusted advisers
Beyond the referrals and eligibility We're working with people, not disability.
Letters form words, and words have meaning This paradigm of which I've been dreaming
Is of people first and inclusive design. Let's leave no one else behind.
The future is yours, theirs, and mine.
