Daniel Yergin: I think a lot of leaders, whether consciously or unconsciously, draw upon
what's known as scenario planning or scenario thinking where they can sort of visualize
alternative futures, and how to adjust and adapt to them, because you know one thing
is
that things don't go in a straight line.
One of the things I've learned about the energy over the years is that just when
everybody knows where everything's going, something changes, either the politics
change, the economics and markets change, or the technologies change.
I do think that right now there's more focus on innovation in technology and
technological development all across the energy spectrum, and so what I think a
student can do is establish the foundation and understanding the range from the
geopolitics and the economics of one side, to the technical on the other. So I think
a kind of broad foundation across disciplines, across departments, kind of under the
heading of energy, is the way to really put yourself in position to play a role in helping
shape the energy future.
