Hello, and welcome to Introducing Collect.
This video will go over how you can use this new tool, and will highlight
some of Collect's main features.
Collect is a centralized library collection for the 24 colleges in Ontario.
It allows students, faculty, and library staff to quickly and easily
search for and locate items in all of the college libraries from one access point.
Collect provides an intuitive Drupal-based interface, and allows you to
find a broad range of materials, including ebooks and videos.
Some of Collect's impressive features include faceted search options,
a "My Cart" to manage search results, and a citation generator.
Also, Collect makes it easy to see the availability of a book
through a link back to individual library catalogues.
Let's take a look. You can access Collect at www.searchcollect.ca
The homepage features a Quick Search bar, and a link to an Advanced Search page.
A side bar on the right, provides tips on how Search
using both the Quick Search and the Advanced Search.
The menu bar at the top of the screen links to frequently accessed locations.
Clicking on Search brings you to the Advanced Search page
where you can search by format, location, and language
and add multiple search terms.
"My Cart" keeps track of the records you mark as you search.
You can create citations from this page, or email your results.
I'll go over that in a moment.
The Library Contact tab brings you to a list of all the colleges
with links to their interlibrary loan departments.
The About link provides an overview of Collect, it's history, what it does
and future possibilities for shared resources.
Let's search for some things in Collect so I can show you how it works.
From the Quick Search page, I'll look for resources on "graphic design".
You can sort by relevance, title, or date on the right side of the page.
More options for faceted searching are available on the left side of the page
where you can filter by format, subject, publication date, college, or language.
You have the option to retain your search selections.
Clicking on "Retain", next to the search bar,
will allow you to save your selected facets while you enter different search terms.
For example, if I select only to view visual material
click on "Retain", and then search for books on "social media"
Collect will only display visual materials on "social media".
Let's look at one of these items in more detail: "Graphic Design, Referenced".
Clicking on the title of the book will bring you to a more detailed record.
As you would expect, you can see more information on
the authors, subjects, and publication details.
This page is particularly useful at finding out what colleges have this book.
Clicking on any of the college names, will bring you to the record in that college library
which gives you access to real-time information on the status of that book.
Let's go back to the record.
The record includes a link to a Google Preview, where available.
You can easily start a list of marked records by clicking on "Add to My Cart".
You can also get a citation in different formats for the book from the screen
by clicking "Get Citation".
There are a number of downloading and export options.
You can share the record via email, or through a suite of social media platforms
by clicking on the plus symbol.
And finally there are a few print options from this screen.
A standard print link that will print the whole page for you
or a clean print option, represented by the green square leaf,
which prints out only the most important information about the record.
You can customize the information that's printed by mousing over each row,
and clicking on the x to remove any information that you don't want to printed.
Let's go back to the "My Cart" feature which collects all of the records that you've marked.
You can move any items from your cart, by clicking on the icon with the red minus sign.
Select the items that you want, and then click "Get Citation"
to bring up a screen of citation options.
You have the same options as with the Records page,
to customize and download citations for everything in your list.
This brings us to the end of our tour of Collect.
As you can see, Collect allows you to quickly and easily search for items
across all of Ontario's college libraries
and identify the status of each item via a link back to individual colleges
from one central location.
You can refine your search results, keep track of your records, and easily export citations.
We hope you find Collect to be a useful research tool.
