Today we're going to be talking about the world of sleep disorders and touching upon
a few particular sleep disorders, as it were. A sleep disorder is just like it sounds. It's
any sort or illness, or affliction, or complication that causes a person to be disordered in their
sleep or in a part of their sleep. We'll be talking about the most common sleep disorder
that is experienced in the sleep disorder office which is obstructive sleep apnea. We'll
also be touching upon some of the other sleep disorders that we would see in the office.
In American society, in North American society, in general, people, in general, whether they
have a sleep disorder or not don't get enough sleep. We need about eight to nine hours as
adults. And most people exist on many, many less. In the course of a seven day week if
you look at the five day work week, it's not uncommon for somebody to run on four or five
hours sleep. And for every hour you run under eight you accumulate a sleep debt. So, for
example, if you only sleep five hours Monday night, you may have a two to three hour sleep
debt for that night. If you only sleep six hours the next, you can add another hour or
two. That's why most of us sleep in on the weekends if not spend the majority of our
time on the weekends, trying to catch up to that weekly debt.
