a noisy marketplace might seem like an unlikely venue for a classical music concert but that's
just what happened in seoul yesterday afternoon when a visiting orchestra left vendors and
shoppers with a memorable experience and a new appreciation for the genre.
our sohn jung-in brings us the story. the sound of classical music fills the air outside
the bustling dongdaemun market in the heart of seoul on a recent tuesday afternoon.
surprised by the unexpected scene vendors and shoppers stop to listen and it's not long
before they are mesmerized by the music.
throughout cheers ring out from the crowd as familiar pieces catch the audience's attention
.
the music guided me to this place and i'm delighted to be able to experience classical
music at dongdaemun market.
it was strange at first to hear classical music but as i listened to the performance
i started to relax and enjoy myself and the director really helped us enjoy the pieces
.
the concert was presented at the busy marketplace which draws rougly a million shoppers a day
... by the euro-asian philharmonic orchestra .
conductor geum nan-sae has performed in a variety of non-traditional venues from art
museums to outdoor plazas but nothing like a shopping district.
my orchestra will perform in berlin next week but the venue doesn't really matter. our job
is to make audiences happy.
with the event in seoul the orchestra is hop ing to make classical music more accessible
to a wider audience... and change the public 's notion that classical music is difficult
.
judging by the reaction of those gathered in dongdaemun that day they've achieved their
goal.
