My name is Hassina I am a senior psychology major within the college of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
My dream career is to become an academic advisor but I want to pursue that
even further and I am looking to earn my doctorate in higher level education.
I chose the major of psychology because I feel it's so relatable you can use all the tools you learn within
your classes and apply them toward real life, daily life routine. I've always been interested
in both education and psychology so I felt that college counseling and student services
was the perfect blend of both. The fact that I am able to work with students and I am able
to become a part of what they are pursuing being part of their success and pushing them
and motivating them. I think that in its self has been so meaningful to be able to be part
of their life and their journey through college.
My internship is with the Academic Mentoring Educational Project
so I serve as an academic mentor within the college of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
We cater to first year freshmen and we provide one on one individual appointments
as well as a group workshop setting to help them with any questions or concerns that they
may have. The Academic Mentoring and Educational Project has really given me an opportunity
to face new challenges and really push me out of my comfort zone every day you are learning
something new which is so empowering.
A normal day in my internship would consist of maybe
holding a workshop with other mentors and our supervisor and we would provide a group
presentation as well as work one on one with students and another day or same day could
be working one on one with an individual students needs whether they are having a problem with
something or just want to plan their next semester schedule or just talk about what
is going on. I've learned a range of skills the internship is a complete reflection of
what I would be doing in my actual position later on so I defiantly wanted to take advantage
of that opportunity. For people going into the field of college counseling and student
services, having that hands on experience is defiantly going to help you in the long
run. Have yourself standout take advantage of any opportunity you feel will be beneficial
to you. Make yourself a well-rounded person with different experiences different student
populations. What I would say inspires me is defiantly the students you see their challenges
and that becomes your challenges as well as their success being part of your success.
They are my main source of inspiration wanting to help them pushes me to keep moving forward
and learning all that I can to provide them with that same knowledge.
I defiantly feel that was a plus in choosing psychology as my major.
