Because i got many questions about the brushes i´m using i decided to make a video about it.
There is not much i can tell you, because i use very cheap and poor brushes.
I tend to handle my brushes pretty careless. It happens often that they dry up because i forget to clean them.
This one for example is rock hard.
All in all i use only few brushes which are still fine, they are mainly from Revell and Italeri.
I have here some synthetic brushes from Italeri, but i don´t like them.
I´m not satisfied with the result of the colour application because they are rough.
I don´t like these, i prefer brushes with real hair. No need for marten-hair brushes, but definately no synthetics.
Because i´m such a brush-assassin i just use these brushes, all other brushes in this glass here are ruined.
I use them only for the application of mud, drybrushing or lower tasks.
These here are my good brushes, except this one here, which i use for painting figures and so on.
Let´s start with the thinnest one, thats an Italeri 3/0 brush.
As you can see the tip is very long.
It is perfect for painting smallest things like eyes, pupils or shirt buttons of 1/72 scale figures.
It is an extreme fine brush but i need it for these things.
Apart from that i prefer thick brushes used with a steady hand. This works fine aswell.
This one here is a 00 brush from Revell.
I use this one often for painting small details like tools on tanks or figures.
It is a rather crude brush but it has a nice tip and with some steadiness it works fine aswell.
For normal details i use a brush with the size 2, again it is a Revell brush.
I like it because it has a sharp tip.
I hate it to use very thin and fine brushes, people think thats better for painting details, that is not correct.
Thin brushes can only grab tiny amounts of paint and i prefer it to have a fine tip on a big brush.
There i can grab a lot of colour and paint in a very flowing style.
This works a lot better and i think that is not only a subjective impression but a fact.
How could i paint with such a fine brush rather large details compared to the size of the brush?
This works very badly because there is not enough paint on the brush to do that properly, in contrast to these two here.
I own several of size 2 brushes, it is my favourite size, all from Revell.
They work fine for various techniques and things to paint, they are good for 1/72 scale figures and 1/35 scale figures alike.
Over all they are very useful.
Of course you need larger and softer brushes for washes.
This one is...if i could only read it...i don´t know the size of this one, i think 4 or 5.
I use this one for the application of washes, it works better on larger areas,
and the softness of the brush allows it to distribute the wash without creating brush tracks.
Finally the large bristle brush. I use this one for dioramas to apply the earth paste or snow.
It is the perfect brush for this task, because it is easy to clean it up again,
because it has not to many bristles.
Here one of my ruined Da Vinci brushes, these have so many bristles it is very difficult to clean them.
Sooner or later they become rock hard.
Even if you use these with usual paint you have to very careful to clean them properly, it seems like i´m not qualified for this.
I´m rather the rough johnny.
As you can see it is not necessary to have a large selection of expensive brushes,
few cheap brushes work fine aswell if you have a steady hand.
I admit that expensive brushes are definately better, but for me the cheap way works better.
I´m not careful enough with my brushes, sooner or later i destroy them.
I don´t like to pay 5€ for a brush which will be ruined very soon.
The cheap brushes usually survive longer, because they have not that much bristles so it is easier to clean them.
Even if you forget to clean them you can rescue them with harsh brush cleaner.
That´s all for now, i hope i was able to help you and maybe you learned something.
Maybe you can learn a lesson from me and maintain your brushes better than me.
I can´t do it but i will try again and again, i will buy some new brushes soon.
As you can see the selection of good brushes is very small.
Until then, your Hamilkar Barkas.
