SCOTT DUPONT: Hi, Scott duPont, award-winning producer. This is Film Producing 101 on Expert
Village. Now what you have to do--the title of this segment is "Know your market of your
film before you proceed any further." You might have heard the name Quentin Tarantino.
He's done incredible films such as "Reservoir Dogs," Pulp Fiction." Did you know that this
guy, Quentin Tarantino, worked at a video store? You know, he's probably getting paid
5 bucks. This is years and years and years ago before he became a director and a producer.
Now, the point I bring up there is he understood what movies sold, what movies got out on video,
what movies got out on DVD because he worked in a video store every single day. So what
you can do is you can go out to video stores, you can look around on the internet, look
at what movies are playing in theaters. A really popular genre is horror or suspense
thriller because they translate into many different languages in foreign countries all
around. You don't want to necessarily make your first feature film a romantic comedy
or a dramatic art piece, okay? 'Cause it might not find a home. So figure out the market,
do some research, even if this is going to a video store trip after trip after trip and
looking what's selling. A lot of them you'll see are not huge budget studio films. Some
of them, these little films on a DVD, they're sitting on your local blockbuster store shelf
that have no name actors, not a big budget but they're selling. So understand the patterns
and that will give you success for your film or at least get you on the right track. Stay
tuned to Expert Village. We'll be right back with the next segment.
