300: Rise of an Empire was supposed to be released this August. But Warner Bros. has
pushed the sequel way back to March 7, 2014.
A statement reads: "Moving 300: Rise of an Empire to March 7 continues in the tradition
of the first 300, and kicks off the Spring movie-going season in epic style. The film
is on track to become all that audiences have come to expect from the franchise."
Although not mentioned in the press release, 300: Rise of an Empire was one of the movies
affected by the recent financial woes of visual effects house Rhythm & Hues so it's likely
the film simply wouldn't have been ready in time for August 2.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has also shifted the release of Tom Cruise's sci-fi action film
All You Need Is Kill from March 7, 2014 to June 6 next year, with select international
markets predating the domestic release starting the weekend of May 30. The earlier international
release date was specifically chosen to put the opening two weeks ahead of the start of
the World Cup.
The statement also reads: "We have tremendous confidence in All You Need is Kill and view
it as a perfect tent pole for the Summer frame, with its combination of great cast, compelling
story and tremendous action."
Directed by Doug Liman (known for the Bourne movies), All You Need is Kill is based on
the acclaimed novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It also stars Emily Blunt and
Bill Paxton.
