Habitat Saint-Sauveur has existed since the late 1970s;
it has 72 housing units offered to retired seniors
in the area, most of whom live on a pension,
at rents that are affordable, below market rates,
which provides them with a better quality of life.
Since the building was built in the late 1970s,
there has been deterioration to the building leaving the
original insulation no longer adequate.
We had determined that, to correct our problem with
the insulation, water infiltration, and so on,
the exterior of our building had to be renovated.
Given that we are a non-profit organization,
we did not have the funds to pay that all at once.
The CMHC officer had contacted us to tell us that there might
be a program for us.
As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan,
there is funding for the renovation of social housing
administered by CMHC.
It was thanks to this funding that an amount of $412, 000
was allocated to Habitat Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts
to redo the exterior of its building.
The object of the work was to redo the exterior envelope of
the building in order to meet the new standards
and improve the insulation.
We changed from stucco and a thin sheet of Styrofoam
to urethane insulation and permanent siding.
In addition, redoing the work near the roof
will also prevent future water infiltration.
When we were told that the federal government,
through CMHC, was giving us a grant, we cheered.
We knew that the work was going to be done and that we
would get the results that we are seeing today.
This way, we can improve the building without having to
pass on the costs to the tenants in future rent increases.
So it's important, in addition to what it gave the region in
terms of the local economy.
Canada's Economic Action Plan also aims to maintain and
create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
The Habitat Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts site
is a good illustration of the spin-offs of this program.
Thanks to Canada's Economic Action Plan,
we were able to complete all the work in the same year,
which is excellent.
Now, we touch the walls, and they are the proper temperature.
So, it's very pleasant to have this warmth that we can now
retain in the apartments.
I am very happy here. It's a nice place to live.
