The step-by-step production of a Mustang seat, made right here in the US of A.
Weíre at the Mustang Motorcycle Seat Factory today and weíre going to go in and make us
a day-tripper for a Harley Davidson.
[Kyle] Dave?
[Dave] Yeah, hi Kyle, welcome to Mustang. Glad to have you here today and weíre going
to build some seats today.
[Kyle] Weíre about ready to enter Mustang Country. So here in Mustang Country is where
all of the magic that is behind Mustang seats happens.
[Dave] Yes, every single Mustang seat is built right here in this facility. All the raw materials
come in through that door, theyíre processed through the facility, and when you get your
finished product, they go right back out the same door.
[Kyle] Alright, so the process starts out, Dave?
[Dave] Okay, in our fiberglass chop department, right, where we manufacture our raw fiberglass
pans, which are our seat base.
[Kyle] Okay.
[Dave] We start with a fiber-glass mold and we prep the mold and we spray a coat of gel
coat over the top of the mold, which is actually the bottom of the seat that you see.
[Kyle] Okay.
[Dave] Then we chop the fiber glass over the top of the gel coat.
[Kyle] Here in this section we call this ìchopping the seat.î
After the fiberglass is rolled and the resin is applied, we go to trimming.
Iím now ready to trim this pan and what Iím going to do is take this knife and Iím going
to cut along this line right here so I get a nice, even cut.
[Instructor] Perfect.
[Dave] Now we allow it to cure and harden. Once it cures and hardens, then we can pop
it off of the mold.
[Kyle] After chopping and molding the fiberglass, now what are we going to do?
[Dave] Well the next step in the process is, we need to finish our pan, so we take our
raw fiberglass pan and we move it over to our finish dept. and then there we grind all
the flash off. We cut out all our ribbon holds, our button holes, and our bracket holes into
the pan. And we apply automotive grade edge trim. Which is a unique feature of our product
because that edge trim provides a cushioning for when the cover goes around the edges of
the pan.
[Kyle] There we go, edge trim is all but installed. Now weíre going to install the brackets.
[Dave] So the rivet bends out in three ears so thatís what it would look like. So these
ears are behind the fiberglass so thereís no way this is going to pull out.
[Kyle] Nice.
[Dave] The next step of our process is to make the foam for our seat. We make all of
our foams here at Mustang, right here in the facility.
[Kyle] Now I put a little bit here in the front and the rest in the back.
[Instructor] Just go back and forth with it, down the front and down the back, just keep
it there. It takes about fifteen seconds and itíll rot, so you have about fifteen seconds
to hammer it shut.
[Kyle] So you just kind of pour it into the pan here and itís got dry in this thing.
How long do you have to let it sit?
[Instructor] About like ten minutes.
[Kyle] Alright so weíll come back in ten minutes and then weíll play with the foam.
Here we go, hahaha.
Check that out. Fresh foam.
[Dave] Now all you have to do is trim it.
[Kyle] There we are, with the help of Mark, weíve gone ahead and trimmed this seat, and
now weíre ready for the next step. Thanks Mark.
[Mark] No problem.
[Dave] Now weíre going to move over to our cutting department, and cut our cover. Weíve
got your seat programmed in already. This is our Vector, which is our automated cutting
machine, does all our patterns for all our seats.
[Kyle] After the Vector gets done cutting out all the pieces, they get gathered together
and taken down to the sewing department.
Weíve just come up from the cutter, and now weíre going to sew all these pieces together
to make the final seat cover.
So weíre going to line up the pieces...
Alright, weíve gotten one section of the seat, now weíre going to have to finish the
rest of this, so it might take awhile. Weíll see you in just a little bit.
Woo. That was a lot of work, but here we now have a Mustang Seat Cover.
[Dave] Okay, Kyle, weíve got our pan, weíve got our foam, weíve got our cover, weíve
made all the components for your seat, now itís time to assemble it.
[Kyle] So Iíve brought all the pieces back here and Iíve heard that youíre the man.
Youíre going to show me how all the pieces go together.
[The Man] Iím one of many actually. The first thing I do is you have to glue the foam to
the pan. We use this nice little air gun here and put it all on the rear part. Now you want
to do the same thing to your pan, there we go, we want to get the overhang over the edge
of the trim of the pan, and the same thing with the rear. Now same thing. Same thing.
Alright! Now weíre going to overlay the foam. We want to make sure that it sticks in the
right places.
So now weíve got that foam layer on, weíre going to lay the cover on, weíre going to
make sure itís in the center, fold it back, make sure everything looks good, and lay on
the cover.
[Kyle] Alright so now weíre pulling the vinyl back and weíre putting a set-hole. Now weíre
going to take a rivet. Hold the gun over it, go through the hole, and rivet the entire
seat pan.
So the last step of this seat is weíre going to put the mounting bracket in. Now that weíve
finished with Dominick weíve got this seat cover all installed, weíre going to come
over here to Pat.
[Pat] This is final inspection. Iíll check the seat to make sure that the nose is straight,
first of all; that all the seams look good. Turn it over and make sure that all the rivets
are in it. Then I identify what it is here.
[Kyle] Now that weíve cleared inspection, weíre going to throw this seat onto the packaging
board and weíre going to send it on down the way.
Check it out!
Here it is, ready for shipment. While Iím packaging this seat up, Ross is going to go
ahead and grab a box. Iím going to pull out my bag here, now the cover...
Alright, so hereís a box.
Now weíre going to hand this seat to FedEx and have it delivered in California where
weíre going to do the install of this Day Tripper on Chrisís Harley Davidson.
Alright! Here it is, Chrisís seat arrived today. Yeah.
So everything about this Mustang is hand-made as you just in the video. Now weíre going
to install the seat and show you how simple it is to install.
See, Mustang does a really good job at providing step-by-step instructions when it comes to
removing and replacing your stock seat with the mustang seat.
Alright, so the stock seat gets removed.
[activity]
It really is that simple.
Chris, youíve been riding this seat this week, and we just made this seat last week
at Mustangís factory, what do you think?
[Chris] Itís amazing. Itís super low-profile, itís way more comfortable than a stock seat.
[Kyle] So what are some of the features, Chris, that you noticed that this seat has over your
stock seat?
[Chris] One of the big benefits for me is Iím kind of tall and this seat moves back
about an inch and a half, two inches, which is a big benefit for me.
[Kyle] An inch and a half to two inches back.
[Chris] Yeah.
[Kyle] Thatís awesome.
[Chris] Yeah, itís pretty cool.
[Kyle] So you got a bunch more leg room?
[Chris] Way more leg room and itís a way more comfortable ride.
[Kyle] Thank you for watching this Mustang Seat: How They Are Made tip of the week. Special
thanks to the Mustang crew for allowing us to come out and film this awesome process.
Until next week, take care and ride safe.
