NASA has released more details about its upcoming Mars rover set to lift on in 2020 and it looks,
exactly like the current curiosity rover. Mainly because curiosity is working well,
really well and secondly because the budget for the 2020 rover is a puny 1.5 billion dollars
and with only small change to splash on their new toy NASA are pretty keen on saving money
by sticking to a tried and tested design but don't be fooled because although we're recycling
old stock footage of curiosity and pretending it's a new rover. Under the hood the curiosity
2, that's my name for it you're welcome NASA, is a very different beast whilst curiosity
looked for signs that Mars could once have supported the building blocks for life mark
2 is out to look for life itself. Ancient life, granted it's not trolling around looking
around to annoy little green men but who knows what it could find. The rover serves a secondary
purpose as well though, part of the funding for it is taken from the manned space program
and the new craft is likely to feature a suite of instruments to assess how well humans could
use martian water supplies and minerals to survive on the red planet. The exact nature
of the instrument hasn't been outlined yet but they're certain to follow those themes.
The rover will quite possibly even be packaging up its samples for later retrievals by astronauts
which is pretty cool, no? If you've come here from our 90 second bulletin thank you and
