This exercise is called 'Does it matter?'. It is designed to help you start to re-frame
how you think about yourself as a successful public speaker.
Make a list of every negative thought that you have about yourself as a public speaker.
Dig deep and list as many as you can.
Add to this list every negative piece of
feedback that anyone who has heard you speak has ever given you.
When you have made your list read through it carefully and ask yourself this question:
"What if none of these things matter?"
Some of the items on your list may be true. Some may only be true in certain circumstances.
Others may only be true when a certain person is saying them.
Some may not be true at all.
Now ask yourself these questions: "What if, true or untrue, not one of the statments
on my list matters at all?" "What would happen if I was to agree that
none of these statements matter?" "What would happen if I was to decide to not
give these statements any further thought?"
Now draw a line through every item on your list one at a time. As you do so, read the
item aloud followed by "This does not matter".
When you have scored through every item on your list discard or delete it. What happened in the past is not needed any more.
