Modern British Studies at Birmingham is an incredibly exciting and innovative research
centre that we have running here. It builds on the considerable concentration of expertise
we have in this area.
Modern British Studies has taught me that History doesn't have to be an isolated process.
It's not all sitting in archives and libraries on your own with the dust forming across the
bridge of your glasses. It can be a collaborative and a collective process.
The programme is for anybody who has interest in researching and studying and understanding
Britain's past. This is an interdisciplinary centre so it will appeal to students who have
backgrounds in all sorts of academic environments.
It's also intended as a stepping stone or a bridge for students who might be interested
in going on to do further research in 19th and 20th century british history.
The programme has four core modules. The first is on new directions in British history, which
looks at several key debates in British historiography. Looks at some interesting and important works
and kind of tries to understand change and development in British historiography. The
second core cource is called Sites and Sources in Modern British Studies. And this is a little
bit different. This is an opportunity to get to grips with the kinds of primary sources
that we might draw upon to study 19th and 20th century Britain.
The third module is historical methods which introduce students to different trends in
historiography more generally over the past thirty to forty years.
The fourth module is dissertation preparation which prepares our students via 121 supervision
and key skills training across the college on how to prepare a major piece of research.
Birmingham is a global city and as such it has a wonderful and dynamic set of resources
and communities that make it a really exciting place to study Modern British History.
