(male narrator) So a recipe for zucchini muffins states that it yields 12 muffins
with 250 calories per muffin.
Instead, you decide to make mini-muffins,
and your recipe ends up yielding 20 muffins.
So if you eat four of those,
how many calories have you consumed?
So this is a kind of problem
where there's lots of ways to answer the question.
Uh...but we really want to come up with an approach
before we just start multiplying and dividing things,
so we can make sure that we're approaching it
in a reasonable way.
So let's start coming up with a solution pathway.
So ultimately, what we wanna know is...is...is calories...
calories... for...four...mini-muffins.
Right?
That's the ultimate question we're trying to answer.
So what information do I need to know
in order to answer that question?
Well, it'd be nice to know the calories in one mini-muffin.
Right, 'cause then it would be easy enough to...
Uh...then it'd be easy enough to figure out
the, uh...calories in four mini-muffins.
Well, how am I gonna figure out the calories
in one mini-muffin?
Well, if I knew the calories in the whole recipe...
then I could just divide by the 20 mini-muffins,
uh...that-that the recipe made.
Well, how could I find the calories
in the whole recipe?
Well, I guess to figure out
the calories in the whole recipe,
I could go back to the original information
and say, uh...
and say that I have 20 regular muffins...
each of which contains 250 calories...
and that's gonna give me a total of...what...
300 calories...sorry, 3,000 calories...
for the recipe.
Now notice what we've done here
is we've created a solution pathway,
working backwards to say this is the information I need to know
until we get to a place where we actually have the information.
So now I know...the calories in the whole recipe.
So now I can go back to the next step up
on my...on my solution pathway and say, okay,
so then to figure out the calories in one mini-muffin,
I'm gonna say 3,000 calories for the entire recipe.
Um...divided by the 20 mini-muffins...
that that recipe produced
gives me 150 calories per mini-muffin.
So now finally, I can answer my question.
The calories for four mini-muffins
would be 150 calories per mini-muffin,
times four mini-muffins,
gives me 600 calories that I have consumed.
Uh...this is, of course, not the only way
to answer this question, but it is one way.
Uh...and really, this is the...
what I would emphasize is the important part.
This idea of don't just start dividing things,
and multiplying things,
and hoping you end up with an answer.
But instead, really think about what...
how am I going to approach this?
What do I need to calculate
in order to be able to answer this question?
Uh...and then once you've established
that solution pathway,
you'll execute your way through it,
until you've answered the question.
