Hi this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm going to talk to you about
using digital tools to come up with a song from scratch. So in this case you have no
idea what your going to do when coming into a recording. You're just going to go and play
around and see what you can do. And the wonderful thing about digital tools, of course, is any
idea that you come up with as you're playing around, you can record and keep and work off
of that. So one afternoon I was really bored and I figured I was just to write a song so
I pulled out a drum track and looped it. (playing) And then I said okay let's come up with a
guitar part. So I pulled out my guitar and I recorded this part. (playing) And as you
can see here, it's just one part that I play and looped a million times afterwards. The
important thing to remember here is that there's no thinking involved. I'm just playing along
with an idea. I like what I got, I loop it, I move on and I come up with something else.
So then still plugged into my guitar, I just added another track (playing). Then I thought,
"well it would be pretty good if there's another part on top of that, it sounds pretty similar
but it's a little bit different". (playing) So what your hearing now are all these different
instruments that I put together and played it back at once and I wasn't thinking about
it ahead of time. There was no plan I was just playing along and coming up with new
ideas as I go (playing). I took this idea and several months later turned it to a real
song which was recorded and released. It was such a simple thing to come up with. I just
sat down and played with my computer one day and using these digital tools I was able to
record something that became the beginning of a good song.
