The course load was pretty much the same, except for one course where the prof asked
us to do 10 book reviews. So we were meant to read 10 books in French and summarize all
of them. They were all in French, but I was in French immersion before so I had studied
Geography and History and Math all in French as a child, so it wasn't a big deal to take
other courses in French History again and Political Science. There were other students
whose French wasn't as strong, and they had the possibility of taking courses in English
but I took French courses. In terms of food, the food is very good. I mean, France is known
for its cuisine and I found that the culture in Paris is quite different than what I was
used to because I grew up in a suburb of Toronto so I wasn't used to living in a big city.
That was a very big experience for me -- living in a city with 8 million people. So just being
around all this hustle and bustle all the time took some getting used to. I worked for
a children's radio station in Berlin called Radio Yo. And they are called the World's
Children Radio Network, so they're not really a radio station as such, but they do produce
their own content which they send to other radio stations, and they try to bridge radio
stations around the world so they can lobby together to make children's radio accessible
from all over the world. So they have links with over 100 countries in Africa, Asia, South
Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, etc. I worked there for four months for my final
work term and I did a lot of different stuff there. Just meeting people from different
backgrounds was a great experience, and also the different tasks that I did such as translation,
editing, and I even produced some of my own radio shows. So that really widened my skill
set.
