bjbj Stop 260 Family tour Mechanical Glass Theater Narrator: Want to take a closer look
at this miniature theatre? It was made in France in the 1700 s, and on the stage is
a scene from of the life of Jesus. Press the red button and leave your finger on it, because
if you take your finger off, the light will go out. Kid 1: It looks like there s a big
party going on. David: It depicts the wedding at Cana when Jesus performed a miracle, and
so you re looking at a large number of figures sitting down to the wedding feast at the table.
Some of them are dressed in real fabrics, which is why we keep the light very low, so
to preserve the colors of the fabrics. There are all kinds of attendants at the sides and
at the back. And then there is a whole host of small details everywhere you look. Kid
2: Check out the chandeliers! Kid 1: I see some swans in the pool. Kid 2: You can even
count the fingers on some of the people s hands! David: Now the way this theatre was
put together was using a technique called lamp-working, or flame-working. And what the
flame-worker does is takes narrow rods and strips of glass, softens it in a flame, and
then while it s still soft, manipulates it into the desired shape. Kid 1: Sounds like
you need good eyes and lots of patience. Narrator: Maybe that s why whoever made this one-of-a-kind
theater decided to spice things up and included a little secret. Kid 2: A secret? Will you
tell us? Pleeease? David: Concealed at the side, there are a series of metal levers,
and by pushing and pulling those, you can actually make some of the figures turn around
and move. Narrator: 300 years old and still moving? Sounds like a fun party! [Content_Types].xml
