TRACK OER is a project supported by the
JISC Open Educational Resources Rapid Innovation programme (OERRI).
OER are a particular challenge. They're out in the open.
And being out in the open means that we don't necessarily know what happens to them.
Their use, their reuse, where they go, what services they sit on can become a bit of a
mystery. What we aim to do is add tracking to help
us build up a better evidence base and to understand better how things are getting used
and reused. And also to help people actually do the things
they want to do. They want to attribute, they want to refer
back and they want to make proper use of the license.
In Track OER we've done three things.
We've improved an existing bit of software called “CaPRéT” which uses cut and paste
as people edit and make changes. And we've added a way in which we can track
that behaviour and report it. And make it more usable on other systems.
We've added a track bug that can be put into content.
It can be wrapped around the license image or put in another image.
And that can be added automatically to content and enable us to track it.
And as it goes to another server we'll know it moves to another server.
We've put this into our download packages, into some of the OpenLearn and LabSpace content.
And the third thing we're doing is improving the way that you can generate these tracking
abilities, so that more people can take advantage of them.
What we've achieved is content that we can show in action.
The Bridge to Success content, we've added that content… the tracking code to it.
So when people download it we can now see how it's reused.
And we've produced a set of tools that'll help you make use of [open…] this tracking
ability.
So if you want to know more and to get at the software which is open source and fully
downloadable then visit
