Today I will be showing you something that is done in Mathematicia. Something that our students learn
in one of our courses.
In this example, we are looking at a way to create, can for a soft drink. In such a way that the volume
of the can is fixed at 14 fluid ounces - this is the typical size. If you ever want to do it in such a
way so that the total amount of material used is as minimal as possible. The animation shows you all the
possibilities of such cans, that you can see their are various solutions. Calculus teaches you how to find
such a solution, in the picture on the left you see the hypothetical can which minimizes the total amount
of the material used. Next to it you see a typical size of a traditional can, you can see the differences
are pretty obvious. Perhaps their are certain things that need to be taken into account, in addition
to the amount of the material used and then you could find a different solution. In this next slide,
I am showing you how a curve can be created by controlling it with four points. As I move the points
around the curve changes its shape and you can put several of them together to create various, more complicated designs.

I have put together several of these curves to shape letters, "L" and "A". We can place the letters all
together on the soda can, and here we have our virtual design for a soft drink. These are just some of
