I was working at a desk and I was pretty unhappy
And I spent all my time working on my car
Working on other projects
and with wood working I can really just jump right in
and I had a lot of the skill I needed, already
and so I just went for it.
You have traditional woodworking and woodworking philosophies and principles that are like thousands of years old and
When you work with something reclaimed
You have to throw a lot of those out the window
Because they don’t really apply to that type of wood
And to that type of aesthetic, and that’s been a huge education for me
Learning the limitations and how to make something that’s still gonna
Be really high quality, last a long time
but also having to cut some of the corners that you normally don’t cut, you know, you take a nice piece of wood, and say “Oh, I’m gonna take a torch to it” just light it on fire, everywhere.
And sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t, and
you know, but you’ll never know, until you try and that’s
That’s one of the great myths I think people feel about
Working with your hands and doing stuff like this,
is I think that everyone’s got it all figured out
Experimentation is huge
If you don’t experiment, you don’t learn
You have to, you have to be willing to invest in yourself
And put your fear aside and say “look, this is what I am doing”
Because if you don’t tell people this is what you are doing, then no ones listens to you
